A man in Ohio has made the headlines after sharing a video on Facebook showing his daughter walk five miles to school as a punishment for bullying.

The father, Matt Cox, says the reason behind this unusual punishment was because his daughter was banned from riding the school bus after getting in trouble for bullying other children for the second time this school year.

The youngster was reportedly suspended from school for three days following the second bullying incident.

What to do if your child is being bullied

In the video, his 10-year-old daughter is seen walking on the side of the road as he is driving slowly behind her in his car.

In the video, he can be heard explaining: ‘Bullying is unacceptable. This is my small way to stop it in my household.’

The video, which has had 21 million views and has been shared by as many as 412,000 people, has been subject to both praise and criticism from viewers.

Many people agreed with his actions, with user Epi Albonico writing:’Kudos sir. You are one of the few parents I have seen in a long time who is not afraid of punishing their child for doing wrong.’

Another also wrote: ‘She is dressed warm and dad is making sure she gets there safely!! Awesome!!!! Hopes she gets it!!! Good job dad!!’

Some people, however, slightly disagreed with his decision to share the post on social media.

One commented ‘It’s a good concept, because children need consequences. But I’m not a fan a shaming your children on social media.’

Another Facebook user made the point: ‘Isn’t uploading this to Facebook for likes and recognition a way of bullying your own daughter?’

Cox later added an update to his post, he said: ‘lesson learned! Still has all her extremities intact is happy and healthy and seems to have a new outlook on bullying as well as a new appreciation for some of the simple things in life she used to take for granted #HOLDOURKIDSACOUNTABLE #STOPBULLYING’

Whether you agree or disagree with his punishment for bullying, Cox has certainly made a powerful statement as a parent.
