  • In November P&G, the Proud Sponsor of Mums, launched the Champion Mums’ Foundation: A campaign offering hardworking mums the chance to be awarded a bursary from a whopping £150,000 pot. The only stipulation was that the award had to be used towards making a positive difference to the winners’ lives as mums, to their family or to the community. Here mum Alison Brown, tells us what winning the prize meant to her…

Like all mothers, Alison Brown, 34, from East Lothian wants the best for her son Ethan, 3. But because he was born with brittle bone disease, his opportunities to play sports were limited – so she took matters into her own hands.

‘Ethan’s bones break easily. He uses a power wheelchair which restricts his movement and makes it hard for him to keep up with his peers. I’ve always believed kids should play sports and games, as it helps them to learn new skills and make friends.

‘I wanted to set up a multisports group so that Ethan, and others like him, could have this chance. I called Lothian Disability Sport, East Lothian Council and some of the mums I knew and arranged to meet up.

‘Then one day I was reading Now and discovered that the P&G Champion Mums’ Foundation was offering mothers the chance to help their families and communities with a bursary award – I applied straightaway.

‘I was washing up when I got the call to say we’d been successful!

‘We now have a multisports coach and some great equipment, thanks to the bursary. We have races and play games like boccia and skittles. It’s great to see so many kids having fun and laughing. Thank you, P&G.’

    Behind the prize

P&G has been helping to make mums’ lives easier for more than 170 years with products such as Tampax and Venus. As the Proud sponsor of Mums, last year it launched the P&G Champion Mums’ Foundation to reward the work mothers do by offering them the chance to win a share of a £150,000 bursary.
