Whether it's a tale for you or one of the best books for kids - reading is an important activity that opens us up to new worlds, introduces us to foreign cultures, challenges our knowledge and aids our development. Starting little ones off young with one of the best books for toddlers is a great way to encourage reading as a skill for life. Though as is the case with most hobbies - reading can come with a price. And those book costs can certainly add up over time.

The good news is there are a number of platforms and opportunities to pick up a free book or a cheap book bargain. And we've shared details on how you can get your hands on them for you and your child.

How to get free books - 12 tips

1. Sign up to Kindle Unlimited

Kindle Unlimited costs just £7.99 ($9.99) a month and offers unlimited books to read on your Kindle. Though the good news is if you're an Amazon customer, you can try it for two months free first. Allowing you to see if it's to your liking, whilst also receiving free books.

During this time, you can get free access to over a million Kindle titles which include ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines. Whilst the subscription does include some bestsellers and must-reads like Harry Potter and The Handmaid's Tale, it's worth noting that the general selection are made up of books from new or less famous authors. But that's not to say that these aren't worthy of a read.

Titles can be read on any Amazon device or the Kindle app, which is available to download for free to your phone or tablet. You can borrow titles as often as you want with no due dates - and can keep up to ten at a time.

If you don't want to continue after the two months, then be sure to set a reminder on your phone to cancel and avoid the monthly fee.

2. Check out Booktrust

If you’re not already familiar with Bookstart - it’s a great resource from charity Booktrust that offers free books to every child under 12 months and those aged 3-4 years. Bookstart gifts additional needs packs for babies and toddlers too, as well as black-and-white booklets for newborns and dual language books.

In England, your health visitor or health professional should gift a yellow bag in your baby's first year to help you share stories, rhymes and songs. And your pre-schooler will receive their special gift envelope when they are 3-4 years old, from their nursery, children's centre or other early years setting.

If you haven't received your Bookstart Baby pack by the time your child turns one, or the Bookstart Treasure pack before they turn five, ask your local library for help.

3. The Love Literacy App

This is a great one if you have young children. EdTech start-up, Readingmate have launched over 200 free children’s eBooks on their free reading app, the Love Literacy App.  The app was developed by English teacher Hannah Rix and husband James in June 2020 to inspire a love of reading.

Explaining why they developed the app, Hannah said: "1 in 8 disadvantaged children in the UK don’t have a book of their own. This is a shocking statistic, and it’s one that we want to help change. That’s why we’ve created the Love Literacy App, which provides free eBooks for children so they can always have a bedtime story. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to read and learn to love reading, and with this app, we’re one step closer to making that dream a reality."

The machine learning within the app generates personalised reading recommendations for every child, rewards with badges for every milestone they reach and encourages conversations around reading and books with comprehension-style questions.

4. Library borrowing online

As well as visiting traditional local libraries, you can now borrow free books from online libraries. Check out sites such as Z-Library to get free books online. Simply search for the book you want and it will download onto your Apple Books or Kindle. Or you can sign up for a free account and download books direct from the site. Once you have an account, you'll get an increased daily download limit and access to the useful features such as getting books sent directly to your email address. So it's definitely worth doing.

Another good option is The Open Library. It's easy to set up an account on their website, then simply search what you want to borrow and read it via your internet browser on your phone or tablet.

5. Swap with friends

This is a great way of bagging some free books, while also broadening your reading material and helping the environment. You can swap or borrow books with colleagues, friends, family, the options are endless. Why not get together once a month and make a night of it? 

For those looking for a formal story swap programme, look no further than Bookswap.co.uk. All you have to do is sign up for free online, list the books you want to swap on their website and search for ones you want to order (if available).

You should also check out The Book Swap Club on Instagram - which involves the same practice but with an in-person element. Founders regularly organise pop up book swap events in London. We recommend doing a search via Google or Facebook to see if there's any community book exchange groups in your own area too.

6. Audible’s free kids audiobooks

Audible boasts a whole catalogue of over 60 kids' audiobooks completely free on their Audible Stories section. You don't even need to sign up for an account, simply choose what you want and stream it. The free books feature titles from best-selling children's authors like David Walliams, Matt Haig and Jeff Kinney.

7. Audible free trial

There's more benefits to be had with Audible.  Similar to the Kindle Unlimited offer, there's an option to sign up to a free 30-day trial of Audible. During this time, you get two free credits to redeem from a selection of audiobooks. 1 credit is 1 audiobook, so you can access two free books during the trial.

Audible offers everything from podcasts to Harry Potter audiobooks. And if you choose their Premium Plus option, you also get 30% off all additional premium selection titles you want, plus access to exclusive sales.

It's also worth following their social media accounts - as they'll often treat subscribers to free books too. These are only available to download for a limited time, so be sure you get yours whilst you can.

8. Look for free Kindle books

Amazon has hundreds of free eBooks you can download and send straight to your Kindle. It’s well worth having a scout to see what’s available.

Search for "free kindle books" on Amazon's website and you'll be shown a host of free books, many of which are temporarily on sale. You'll find books organised into categories and many of these books are classics, as well as kids books and thrillers. They'll have a button that says "Buy for Free" on their individual payment pages and will specify if it's a limited time deal.

9. Kobo Books

Kobo Books is an online store which offers eBooks, audiobooks and eReaders. And if you look hard enough you'll discover their collection of free eBooks and audiobooks too. From romance to mysteries and thrillers, there’s something for everyone in their free section.

Staff members like the Romance Editor and Audiobook Editor also highlight their pick of the free books each month. So you know you're not getting a dudd one because of it's free status.

You will need to create an account to be able to read the books, but this is totally free. And in further good news, there's no limit to the amount of free books you download. Win win.

10. Sign up for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

If you have a child between the ages of 0 to 5 and your local area participates, you can sign up to get free children’s books from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. There are participating communities within the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Republic of Ireland.

Once you sign up via the website, each month, Dolly’s Imagination Library mails a high quality, age appropriate book to all registered children at no cost to the child’s family. The books are carefully selected and include traditional stories and rhymes, books by popular authors and illustrators, non-fiction content, plus newly published titles.

11. Check out loyalty schemes with book shops

Lots of online book shops and publishing companies offer reward schemes when you purchase books with them. For example, Penguin Random House offer a points system where you collect 10 points with every purchase. Then, once you have 120 points, you can use them to claim a free book of your choosing.

Another clever way to get free books from publishers is to start a blog. Often, publishers will send advanced reader copies to book bloggers for review. Usually, 1000 Instagram followers is enough to request free samples. Most publisher's websites have a 'contact' or 'press' section, where you'll find contact details to request free books.

12. Follow your favourite authors

Make sure you’re following your favourite authors on social media, or sign up to their mailing list. Authors tend to let their fans know exactly when books are free or discounted for a limited time. Make sure you sign up for notification updates to avoid missing out. You can also follow authors on most eReaders to get similar updates.

Best books for toddlers can be tricky to find as they range massively, from alphabet to numbers, boardbooks to paperback, pop-up to fold out? The choices are endless.

It can be a good idea to start with the best interactive books for babies, and then building up from there. In no time at all, you'll soon be moving on to the best bedtime stories for kids and then to best books for teenagers. And to really create lovely memories you could choose a personalised book.

But until then, know that toddlers have a natural love of the ridiculous, as well as rhyming and repetitive words paired with bold and bright illustrations. Reading with them can be both a joy... and a burden. There we've said it.

What to look for in a toddler book

Age-Appropriateness - Choosing titles that are appropriate for your toddler's age group means it might capture their attention. Books for older kids may include complicated storylines and concepts that simply aren't interesting for little ones.

Durability - To create a love for reading in your child, it helps to encourage open access to their books. So you'll want to reach for hardcover or board books as they are more likely to hold up against your toddler's rough handling. When is World Book Day?

World Book Day 2024 takes place on Thursday 7 March. In the UK, the literary event always falls on the first Thursday in March. The day is dedicated to celebrating reading and all things books. To mark the occasion, schoolchildren usually dress up as a character from their favourite children's book. It's often encouraged for them to bring along the accompanying book, so people know which literary icon they've dressed as.

Why are there two dates for World Book Day?

Because World Book Day is something honoured globally - in over 100 countries so not everyone celebrates it on the same day. In other parts of the world, the event takes place on April 23. This alternative date was chosen as it marks the same date several famous authors died: William Shakespeare and Spanish writers Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra and El Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.

For this reason, the rest of the world celebrates on 23rd April. Though there's an explanation as to why it's celebrated on a different day in England and Ireland.

Why is World Book Day different in the UK?

World Book Day falls on a different date in the UK because the worldwide April date conflicts with an important UK occasion: St George's Day. The patron Saint's Day falls on April 23 each year which is the same as World Book Day for other countries.

There's also the matter of the Easter school holidays which can fall on different dates in April each year. The March date ensures that UK schoolchildren will be in school to celebrate World Book Day with teachers and classmates. 

What are World Book Day tokens?

World Book Day £1/€1.50 World Book Day book tokens are given out ahead of the big day to children and young people via schools, nurseries, bookshops, and other World Book Day providers. 

Children can then visit their local bookstore to exchange their tokens for one of the World Book Day £1 book for free titles above. Or they can use it to get £1 off a full-price title that is £2.99 or more.

In addition to local independent book retailers, children should be able to redeem their vouchers at Asda, Blackwell’s (selected stores only), Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco, The Works, Waterstones, and WHSmith.

When was the first World Book Day?

The first-ever World Book Day took place in April 1995 - though it wasn't until 2 years later in 1997 that the UK and Ireland got in on the fun too.

World Book and Copyright Day - as it's otherwise known - was created by UNESCO in 1995 during their General Conference in Paris. The aim was "to recognize the scope of books - a link between the past and the future, a bridge between generations and across cultures," reads the UNESCO website. 

"On this occasion, UNESCO and the international organizations representing the three major sectors of the book industry - publishers, booksellers, and libraries, select the World Book Capital for a year to maintain, through its initiatives, the impetus of the Day’s celebrations."

It’s official - the much-loved author and illustrator of the How To Train Your Dragon and The Wizards of Once series Cressida Cowell has been asked to continue in her role as Waterstone’s Children’s Laureate for another year until June 2022, in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

An incredibly important book with a message about environmentalism. “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot / Nothing is going to get better, it’s not”. You have to have a heart of stone if you’re not moved by this book.

This book has wicked stepfathers, and chemicals that make you fly. When I was nine years old, I read it to my brother and sister, my cousins - to anyone who would listen, and 35 years later, I read it to my own children. I have never met a child who does not love this book.

Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer (£6.99, Penguin, PB)

This is a brilliantly written, exciting and original adventure series in a wildly original fantasy world. It's also extremely funny.

Lost Words by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris (£20, Penguin, HB)

We need our children to have a connection with the natural world, and the language to describe it is crucial. Robert and Jackie’s book is not only a truly beautiful book - it’s an important one too.

Knock Three Times is book three in Cressida Cowell’s best-selling, award-winning The Wizards of Once series (£12.99, HB, Hodder Children’s Books)

It’s pretty much a guarantee that most households around the country will have a bookshelf full of dusty old 90s favourites.

And even more than two decades after the world phenomenon was first released in the form of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the iconic red-covered book can likely still be found on numerous dusty bookshelves across country.

And as much as it is tempting to have a clear out and donate them to the nearest library, school or charity shop, there’s something stopping the wizard in all of us from ‘obliviating’ them from our lives.

Well, it turns out that if you are one of the HP fans who couldn’t bring yourself to include the reads in your annual spring clean, you could actually be rewarded for your unwavering loyalty.

A recent sale of a rare first-edition of the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, has just shown how much money you potentially get if you were to sell your copy on.

At an auction on the BBC show Bargain Hunt today, a copy of the first book in the series went for an incredible £28,500 - after its owner picked it up for just 25p 20 years ago!

The Daily Mirror reports that the book was one of the very first hardback copies of J.K Rowling's much-loved novel. 500 copies of the first edition hardbacks were made, and 300 of them were actually sent to libraries.

The lucky owner on Bargain Hunt actually bought his copy at a library, before reading it and popping it back on his shelf for a couple of decades.

After deciding to get it valued, he was thrilled by how much his decades-old copy went for.

The owner confessed, “I can’t believe it. It’s what I’d hoped for but I never really believed my book would make that price.”

And it's not the first time this has happened to a lucky Harry Potter fan! Late this year, another man sold his copy of the Philosopher's Stone for the same price, approximately £28,500, after buying it years ago for just £1 at a second-hand book shop.

So how do you know if you have one of the coveted first editions? Well there are actually two particular typos you need to look out for.

First of all, the back cover of the book will have the wrong spelling of ‘philosopher’ in its first sentence.

Secondly, if you turn to page 53 you will see that ‘1 wand’ has been repeated in the list of school supplies.

Other indications of the rare first-edition include JK Rowling being referred to as Joanne, the print line on the copyright page must be ’10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1’ and the latest date will be 1997.

Finally it has to be an edition published by Bloomsbury.

In fact, one social media user reckons they've already found a rare copy!

A round up of our favourite 50 stores for kids...

In honour of one of our favourite days of the year, World Book Day, Sainsbury's have created a list of the top 50 kids books - and oh, what a wonderful list it turned out to be!

Unsurprisingly, classic children's author Roald Dahl topped the list with Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, whilst Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland came in second.

However, further down the list, there's a perfect mixture of old meets new, with authors like Enid Blyton and Robert Louis Stevenson sitting side by side with J.K Rowling and Philip Pullman. Whatever your favourite childhood tale is, it's probably in the top 50 list of kids books somewhere!

Do you have any of these children's books in your loft? If so, they could be worth some serious money.

Hands up if you’ve got a box full of childhood books gathering dust in your garage or attic.

If so, you’ve probably thought about taking them to a charity shop or making a few pennies – or if you’re lucky, pounds – from them at a car boot sale. Well, stop right there.

Some classic children’s books could be worth up to £12,000 according to antiques expert David Harper. Yes, really.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is one of those books that’s really stood the test of time. First published in 1969, it’s still one of Amazon’s bestselling children’s titles.

A brand new copy will set you back just £3.99, but if you happen to have an original 1969 edition, it could net you a cool £12,085 – assuming it’s in mint condition.

And while you can also nab a new copy of Maurice Sendak’s classic kids’ book Where The Wild Things Are for less than a fiver, if you have a 1963 first edition lurking in your attic, it could earn you £5,090.

That’s more than three times as much as you’d have got if you’d sold it in 2004, when it would have fetched £1,540.

Even books from the ‘80s and ‘90s could net you hundreds of pounds – a first edition of 1985’s The Polar Express is worth £475, while a copy of The Gruffalo dating from 1999 could fetch £161.

Damaged or missing pages or dust jackets can ‘significantly’ decrease the value of a book, but even one that’s ‘a bit thumbed and looks valueless’ might be of value to an eagle-eyed collector, David explained.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

The Great Gatsby is another classic set in the 1920’s during the ‘Jazz Age’. The main character Jay Gatsby is surrounded by wealthy socialites in the fictional area of West Egg. The novel reveals the characters’ obsession with money and status, as Gatsby tries to impress Daisy Buchanan by hosting extravagant parties every weekend. Although Gatsby seems to have it all – money, popularity and charmingly good looks – he remains void of the one thing he wants the most, true love.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

Kathryn Scott’s debut novel is set in Mississippi during the summer of 1962 and explores the lives of three ordinary women – Aibleen, Skeeter and Minny. The book tells the story of black maids, Aibleen and Minny, who work for white high-class families. Skeeter, a daughter of the Southern family Aibleen works for, struggles with the boundaries set on her as a white female. Each character confronts the issues of race, social class and gender as these women have more in common than they realised.

P.S. I Love You by Cecelia Ahern

Cecelia Ahern’s debut novel lives up to the hype by becoming a number one best seller. The captivating novel will tug on your heartstrings as you read about the life of Holly, an Irish widow who is heartbroken when she loses her husband Gerry to a terminal illness. Unable to cope without the love of her life, Holly starts receiving romantic letters written by her husband before he died, teaching her that life must go on. The novel is a must read for all ages, filled with moments that will make you laugh while also making you cry.

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

A psychological thriller that tells the story of three women who all live troubled lives – Rachel, Anna and Megan. The main character Rachel Watson is an alcoholic whose marriage has broken down and spends her days travelling on the same train commute. Rachel begins to become obsessed with a couple whose house she passes daily and wistfully longs for their ‘perfect’ marriage. One day Rachel witnesses something shockingly disturbing and suddenly Rachel, Anna and Megans’ lives all become intertwined. There were many changes made for the film which left some fans disappointed, but the book was highly praised for it’s intense and enticing storyline.

My Sisters Keeper by Jodi Picoult

Another emotional novel that explores the lives of sisters Kate and Anna. Kate has been battling leukaemia since she was a young child, but Anna has been her lifesaver – born as a product of genetic alteration to help keep her sister alive. Although Anna isn’t sick, she has undergone operations and procedures from when she was a new-born. As Anna realises her life is no longer hers, she decides to do the unimaginable, even at the risk of tearing her whole family apart. The novel’s ending is different than the movie so be prepared for two emotional experiences.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

A classic romantic novel written in 1813 that explores the life of heroine Elizabeth Bennet. The book illustrates the reality of being a woman during the 19th Century and deals with the challenges faced through the love story of Elizabeth and Mr Darcy. Fuelled with humour, the novel depicts society’s expectations on marriage, education and status at a time where Elizabeth must learn to find out who she truly is.
