Advice for travelling with a baby

Although it's completely fine to take a new baby on holiday, there are some guidelines to help make it as easy and stress free as possible. For example, you might want to avoid making a really long journey if your baby has colic, is tongue tied, or if you're feeling a bit overwhelmed. However, your baby can travel as soon as they are born - as long as they have a passport or visa if necessary. By three months old, it's thought they'll be much more ready to travel as they're less fragile, and are less likely to be upset by any change of routine than when they're a bit older.

Many parents eagerly await the time when the family holiday comes around - it's an opportunity to get away from juggling work with family life and spend some quality time with your kids. Whether you're heading for two weeks on the beach or squeezing in a couple of days away to make the most of your bank holidays, chances are you're satisfied with the escape, no matter what type of holiday it is.

But when it comes to the popular holiday destinations kids want to visit, the options are a bit more limited. You'll need a trip that offers plenty of things to do with kids that will keep them occupied, engaged and actively wanting to spend time with their parents - which might not sound like a big ask, but parents of older kids will know how fussy they can be.

With this in mind, we've spoken to two travel experts, who have revealed their recommendations for the best holidays with teenagers that are guaranteed to keep them satisfied - no matter your budget.

1. All-inclusive resorts

There are a number of benefits to all-inclusive holidays for families. Growing teens will be able to curb their hunger at all hours with no extra cost, and a variety of dietary requirements will be catered for. Many all-inclusive resorts have great facilities to keep the whole family occupied, such as swimming pools, waterparks, sports centres and spas.

Mercedes Zach, travel expert at ASAP Tickets, explains, "It might seem like a more expensive choice at first, but if you combine all the daily meals, activities and transportation costs together, this option will help you save quite a lot of money at the end of your trip.

"Teenagers can explore the nearby area and meet other holidaymakers their age without you having to worry about their whereabouts. And the best part is that there are lots of great and budget-friendly beach resorts all around the world - from Southern Europe and Asia to the US and beyond - where everything is taken care of for you."

2. Safari adventures

Adam Schwab, co-founder and CEO of Luxury Escapes, explains that a South African safari is an excellent choice for families seeking an educational and immersive adventure. "This type of trip not only provides teenagers with the opportunity to observe majestic animals in their natural habitats, but also fosters a deeper understanding of the importance of conservation and the delicate balance of our ecosystems," he says.

He suggests booking a private tour, such as the Intimate South Africa Tour offered by Luxury Escapes. The trip begins in Cape Town and will take you to the Greater Kruger National Park, where you'll have the chance to witness the Big Five (lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffalo) in their natural habitat.

3. Take a hike

For families with younger kids, camping is often a popular holiday option. But teenagers may find these trips a little under-stimulating, which is why a more active backpacking or hiking trip could be a better choice for older children.

"Not only will it allow you to spend time outdoors and explore new destinations off the mobile screen, but it will also be a great chance to bond, make memories and overcome challenges that might occur along the way," travel expert Mercedes suggests.

She continues, "Whether you live in an urban environment or have direct access to wide open spaces and trails, I suggest starting with a moderate-level one-day hiking path that can be found pretty much in every country. From forest preserves and lakeshore paths to national parks and mountain trails, it’s not hard to pick a green space to explore in the outdoors."

Mercedes says you could come up with games to play together during your hiking trip, or even encourage your teen to bring along a friend or two to enjoy the trail as well.

4. Tropical paradise

Adam Schwab suggests choosing a tropical destination with plenty of sports and activities to keep teenagers entertained. If your holiday budget allows, he says, "Phuket, Thailand's largest island, is a fantastic choice for families with teenagers seeking a perfect balance of adventure, relaxation, and cultural exploration."

The island's many beaches offer opportunities for swimming, snorkelling, and water sports like jet-skiing and parasailing. "For a more immersive experience, take a boat trip to the nearby Phi Phi Islands, where you can explore hidden coves, spot colourful marine life, and even try your hand at rock climbing," Adam says.

Inland, Phuket's jungle-covered hills provide a perfect setting for hiking, zip-lining, and ATV adventures.

But if flights to South East Asia are a bit out of your budget, the Greek Islands a similarly spectacular destination for snorkelling and water sports, along with beautiful beaches to relax on.

5. City breaks

City breaks are a great option to keep kids of all ages entertained, because they offer so much to. If your kids like museums and art galleries then a trip to a capital city is sure to be a winner, but there will also be plenty of opportunities for shopping, trying popular restaurants and visiting local parks if that's more their vibe.

Travel expert Adam suggests New York City as an ideal destination for families with teenagers, explaining, "For teens, the city is a never-ending source of inspiration and discovery. Iconic landmarks that they’ve seen in their favourite movies, like the Statue of Liberty, Central Park and Times Square, blow their minds. Not to mention the food scene, street art, live theatre, shopping and NYC culture forming the perfect envious backdrop for TikTok."

Meanwhile, Mercedes Zach agrees that New York is a great choice for parents with older children. "One of the main perks to bringing teens on such a vacation is that it can be a great opportunity to entertain, educate and teach them about cultural diversity all at once," she says. "Each neighbourhood in the city has its own unique character and charm. And I'm sure teenagers will especially love to indulge in a classic New York-style pizza."

6. Surf camp

If you've got sporty teenagers who are full of energy, and you fancy getting some time at the beach in for yourself, a surfing holiday might be a good option.

Travel expert Mercedes says: "Even if they have never tried surfing before, it might quickly become their (and also your) new hobby. From mellow waves where you can learn the basics to more advanced surf camps to challenge yourself, the world is full of amazing places where you can make this dream a reality and take your family beach vacation to the next level."

She suggests Portugal, Morocco, Australia and California as some of the most popular destinations for surfing, but says you can catch decent waves pretty much anywhere where there's open water. If it's a holiday in the UK you're after, north Devon and Cornwall are considered the best areas in the UK for the sport.

North Wales

Granada, Spain

Spain's history of its Moorish occupation is so visually rich in Granada, what with the astonishing palaces and gardens of the Alhambra being Spain's most-visited monument.

The Magic Kingdom is also known for its nighttime Electrical Parade, Wishes Nighttime Spectacular at Cinderella's Castle and rides like Space Mountain and Splash Mountain. This park is made up of six themed lands which include New Fantasyland. Open since 2012, this enchanted area features waterfalls, grottoes, forests and circus big-tops, plus character interactions to the 'Be Our Guest Restaurant' set in the ballroom, Rose Gallery and 'West Wing' of the Beast's Castle.

New additions at the Magic Kingdom include the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (pictured above) which opened to the public in May 2014. This musical ride into the mine is a must for fans of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs who can travel in innovative cradle-like pivots which let the vehicles swing back and forth as the ride twists and turns, accompanied by music from the film and animated characters. Since March 2014, Main Street also hosts a daily Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade with parade floats, costumes and music.

The other 3 theme parks are Disney's Hollywood Studios, Epcot and Animal Kingdom. At Disney's Hollywood Studios, experiences include the stomach-churning tower of Terror of Tower and the magical Fantasmic! evening show as well as the Star Wars simulator, Muppet Vision 3D and the interactive Animation Courtyard. Water fun Have a day off from the rides with a visit to one of the two Disney water parks, Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach. Typhoon Lagoon is a 56-acre water park, home to one of the world's largest surfing lagoons and the peak of Mt Mayday, a man-made mountain with an assortment of slides and rafting adventure activities and plenty more rides to boot. The 66-acre Blizzard Beach (pictured) is themed around a storm-battered ski resort. Its centrepiece is the 90-foot peak Mt Gushmore. 30 feet above the peak is the platform for the park's most famous ride, the 350-foot slide Summit Plummet, one of the world's fastest free-fall water slides. Top money saving tips for Disney holidays

First things is, don't be daunted by booking a Disney holiday - it's not as complicated as it seems. Follow these tips to make it more simple.

There are various ways to book your holiday. 1. Book a full package holiday through a tour operator such as Virgin Holidays, Thomson or Thomas Cook. This will include sreturn flights, car hire and your Disney Resort on-site accommodation included (plus park tickets and dining plans) 2. Book an Orlando package holiday with flights, car hire and a villa, apartment or hotel close to Disney instead of staying on-site. You then buy your park tickets separately. 3. Alternatively, you can book your flights separately then book your Disney hotel, tickets and dining plan together.

When to go Of course, holidaying outside of the summer, Easter and Christmas holidays will keep costs down so if you have pre-school -aged children, book off-season for the biggest bargains.If your kids are at school, this might not be possible and in these cases, the best way is to book a package and look out for special offers.

Staying at Disney If you want to stay in the Disney complex, the five Value Resorts or camping at Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground can work out best value. As a Disney Resort guest, it means you can buy dining plans in advance to keep the cost of your holiday down. You also benefit from extended theme park hours (every day, a different park opens an hour early and stays open up to 2 hours after closing), free parking, complimentary airport and resort transport while shopaholics at Downtown Disney can have their bags sent direct to the hotel. The five Value Resorts are Disney's All Star Music, All Star Movies, All Star Sport, Pop Century Resort and the newest one, Art of Animation Resort (pictured) which opened in 2012 and has themed rooms and courtyards such as Nemo and The Little Mermaid.

Getting about If you don't have your own car, don't worry. Depending on which hotel you're staying at, there's a range of transport option from Disney's Magical Express Transportation (pictured) taking you from Orlando International Airport to your hotel to the free buses connecting hotels, theme parks, water parks and the Downtown Disney shopping area. There's also a monorail system, ferryboats and coach shuttles taking you around the resort. If you've hired a car, you can drive from park to park - everything is clearly signposted and parking is free if you're a staying at a Disney hotel.

Buying park tickets You can buy tickets separately from your flight and hotel but it's recommended you buy in advance from the UK - it saves time, money and disappointment. The Magic Your Way ticket system means you can buy the right tickets for your budget and needs. You can buy day tickets to individual parks but better value are the multi-day options as the per-day is less. It's best to check the Special Deals and Offers page for the latest offers. Currently you can buy 9 days for the price of 7 and includes access to the 4 theme parks and 2 water parks and other Disney locations. This is for people going to Disney between now and 31st December and must be booked by 11 August 2014. Other offers for 2015 includes free dining plans and a 14-Day Ultimate Ticket for the price of a 7-day one with $100 Disney dollars spending money and Disney hotel and tickets from £37 per person per night. The fast pass: Queuing is the biggest issue for popular rides so make the most of the free fast pass system. Disney Resort guests can visit MyDisneyExperience.com and make their selections up to 60 days before their visit. If you're a day guest or pass holder, you can do this 30 days in advance. You can also visit the FastPass+ kiosks at the park and choose your rides for that park on that day. When to go: The resorts may always feel busy, but Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are quieter days. Late afternoon is best for the most popular rides and while some holidaymakers will head off for dinner, early evening is another good bet for cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. If you do go early morning, start at the back of the park and work your way around anti-clockwise.

Eating at Disney If you want to eat at the resort, Disney Dining Plans can work out to be good-value for guests at Disney Resort hotels - you can book them with your park ticket or they are sometimes included as part of your holiday. There are three dining plans which offer a varying number of quick-service meals, snacks and table-service dinners. They're valid at over 100 places and can save up to 40% off buying meals individually. The prices and offers change regularly depending on the holiday/offer you book. Find out more here. Top tip 1: Avoid the tears - Disney character breakfasts (pictured) and some table-services restaurants are popular so book in advance or call 0800 028 0778 from the UK. Top tip 2: Dining plans are not compulsory. You can also take food and drink into the theme parks so pack a small coolbag with lunch and drinks to save money.

You can ask questions direct to the panellists or browse the forum for ideas. Here are some top tips from Disney Mom panellist, Elisabeth S. - Keep an eye on the Deals and Special Offers page for dining, room and package discounts. - The lowest-priced places to stay on Walt Disney World property are Value Resorts which offer fun pools, whimsical themes, food courts, access to Extra Magic Hours, and free transportation to and from the parks and airport. - Skip the add-ons such as being able to park-hop and stick to one park per day for the lowest-priced ticket plus you make the most of each theme park. - Pack peanut butter and breakfast bars as snacks. Save on food costs by eating at least one meal per day in your room or as a picnic. Stock up on juices and snacks for additional savings - Steer clear of the shops to avoid unnecessary extra spending - Do your research. Getting to Gatwick

What’s there: Woolacombe Bay, Twitchen House and Easewell Farm are the four holiday parks which fall under this holiday park group. All located in Devon, they offer lots of different accommodation options ranging from caravan homes to luxury lodges. Best off all, 40 free on-site activtiies are included in the price of a stay and the choice is impressive. Activities included in the price include tennis, mini golf, steam room, sauna, kids’ clubs and use of indoor and outdoor pools. Woolacombe also offer activities you can pay extra for such as their surfing simulator, high ropes course, bowling and 9-hole golf course.

Away Resorts holiday parks

Where are they?: Away Resorts have four holiday parks in the UK - Mill Rythe Holiday Village on Hayling Island near Chichester, Whitecliff Bay on the Isle of Wight, Tattershall Lakes Country Park in Lincolnshire and Barmouth Bay, the newest park and first in Wales.

What’s there: Each park has its own features. Whitecliff Bay on the Isle of Wight has a secluded beach, glamping area, original 1930s vintage caravans and pools. Mill Rythe on Hayling Island offers half-board accommodation and live music devised by West End musical directors while Tattershall Lakes Country Park has five lakes, ideal for watersports such as jet-skiing, banana boating and kayaking. It also has a leisure complex with spa, pool and gym and is set in 365 acres of parks and woods. The newest park is Barmouth Bay (pictured) which opened this year in Talybont, north Wales and is located by the beach and against the backdrop of Snowdonia National Park. All parks are part of the MyActive scheme for children aged 3+ with activities such as pool snorkelling and body zorbing, while MyPlay activites include potter and nature discoveries.

Pinewoods Holiday Park, Wells-Next-The-Sea, Norfolk

What’s there: On the north Norfolk coast, bordering the Holkham National Nature Reserve, this holiday park has a selection of caravans and lodges – the caravan homes are the best value if you’re looking to save money. From the site, a short path leads onto the long, sandy Wells Beach where beach huts can be hired. Also near the park is the pretty town of Wells-Next-The-Sea and Abraham’s Bosom, a boating lake thought to be one of the only land-locked salt water lagoons in the UK. Cycling is a great way to explore the area. Other attractions and facilities include the miniature gauge railway next to the park operating an all-season service to the town, 9-hole pitch-and-putt and bike hire. There’s also an onsite cafe and shop.

Parkdean holiday parks

Where are they?: Parkdean have 24 holiday parks in the countryside or near the coast in Scotland, Wales, Dorset, Devon, Hampshire, Norfolk and Cornwall.

What’s there: Facilities vary but many parks have indoor and outdoor pools, shops, restaurants and nightly entertainment. White Acres in Cornwall (5 miles from Newquay) has 13 course fishing lakes, heated indoor pool, an adventure play galleon (pictured) and kids’ clubs. Mullion Holiday Park is located in an Area of Outstanding Beauty on Cornwall’s Lizard Peninsula, perfect for family walks and picnics. Oakdene and Forest Edge Holiday Parks, Hampshire

What’s there: Part of Shorefield Holiday Parks, these two family holiday parks are close to each other near the New Forest. Oakdene (pictured) is set in 55 acres of parkland and is the only holiday park on the south coast which offers the Go Active itinerary (in conjunction with Hoseasons) and is especially great for cycling. It now offers Balance Ability sessions using balance bikes (for children aged 3-7) for £4 an hour – other activities include den-building, body-zorbing and water pedlerz. It also has a heated pool, 34-metre flume, gym and spa as well as a cafe and bar. Nearby is the smaller 7-acre Forest Edge Holiday Park whose guests can use Oakdene’s facilities including the Go Active programme. Accommodation ranges from caravans and budget chalets to lodges and bungalows with BBQ, private garden and hot tub.

Holgates Holiday Park Silverdale, Morecambe

What’s there: Handily located near Morecambe Bay and an hour’s drive from the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and Forest of Bowland, Holgates Silverdale is great for families who like to be outdoors as there are lots of beaches, cycling routes and easy walking trails such as the climb up to the Pepper-Pot’ at Silverdale. Also popular is pond-dipping at Leighton Moss Nature Reserve. At the holiday park itself, accommodation is in 6-person caravan holiday homes and on-site facilities include a heated pool with bubble pool, turbo seat and spa pool, sauna/steam rooms, putting green, games room, soft play and two outdoor adventure playgrounds. There’s also a bar, restaurant and shop.

Woodovis Park, Devon

What’s there: This independent holiday park is located around the Tamar Valley on the edge of Dartmoor on the Devon and Cornwall border. It’s perfect if you want to get out and explore the countryside which is full of walking and cycling trails. Onsite, there is an indoor pool and sauna plus weekly archery, water walking’ in a giant see-through beach ball (Sundays in high season only) and free family foraging walks. They also offer outdoor table tennis, a pétanque (boules) court. With a full spectrum of accommodation options from innovative camping pods (pictured) to static caravans (as well as pitches for campers), it is exceptionally good value. If you like to take your dog on holiday, Woodovis is particularly appealing as the nearby woods are perfect for dog walking.

Hoseasons Holiday Parks

What’s there: Hoseasons has numerous holiday parks across the UK from the award-winning Ladram Bay in Devon to Innes-Maree in Scotland’s northern Highlands. 16 of the Hoseasons parks are also part of Go-Active Breaks, the biggest activity breaks programme in the UK. One of these is Talacre Beach in Prestatyn in Flintshire, Wales. Archery, raft-building, circus skills and sea scooters are some of the activities available at an extra cost. The park also has an indoor tropically heated pool, gym, spa and newly refurbished Country Club bar and restaurant complex. What’s there: Located on the coast at Stranrear in Dumfries & Galloway, the views of the coastline are impressive from this family-run holiday park. There is also a tennis court, bicycles for hire and wakeboarding and kitesurfing on the beach. Ocean Edge and Regent Holiday & Leisure Parks, Morecambe

Where are they?: The clifftop Ocean Edge (pictured) overlooks the Irish Sea on the edge of Morecambe Bay. Regent is also close to the beach and Morecambe promenade. Both parks are run by South Lakeland Holidays.

What’s there: Both holiday parks have indoor heated swimming pools, saunas, soft play areas and outdoor sports. They also have a brand new Kids Club for 2013 called The Buzz Club featuring new mascot, Buzz the Bumbaloo, for under 12s and activities such as DJ workshops, crafts and cookery. The parks are ideally located for exploring the surrounding countryside and seaside too.
