When the Death in Paradise spin-off Beyond Paradise was announced, fans of the original series couldn't wait to see Kris Marshall return in his iconic DI Humphrey Goodman role. With the action switched to home turf in the UK, it wasn't long before viewers were also curious about where Beyond Paradise filmed. Even the theme tune had everyone talking - the catchy jingle along with a brilliant soundtrack, quickly had those tuning in wanting to know where they could get their hands on a playlist.

Will there be a season 2 of Beyond Paradise?

Yes, both a season 2 and Christmas special of Beyond Paradise have been confirmed. 

In a statement, Kris Marshall said "I'm beyond excited to have begun filming the second series of Beyond Paradise. 'Shipton Abbott' is such a wonderful location to call home for a while and it's a delight to join up with my fellow police team for another batch of weird and wonderful cases, and to see what's in store for Humphrey and Martha in the next chapter of their lives."

Martha actress Sally Bretton added "Series one of Beyond Paradise was such a joy to be a part of and I'm ecstatic to have returned to what already feels like a second home in Shipton Abbott. I can't wait for audiences to see what we have planned - the second series is set to be brilliant!"

On April 7, the Beyond Paradise Instagram account made the news official, writing "It's official - #BeyondParadise will be returning for a second series!" Among a slew of overjoyed fans, one responded with "Brilliant! It's very rare a spin-off is as good as the original! But it was absolutely perfect! So pleased there is going to be a season 2... And as for the ending of season one, what an amazing crossover! Loved it."

Beyond Paradise season 2 release date

So far, there has been no official season 2 Beyond Paradise release date offered, as it is still in the process of filming. 

The countdown to the Christmas special is on however, as this will be airing during the 2023 festive period. Tim Key, Executive Producer at Red Planet Pictures said "We were delighted with how quickly the audience took Beyond Paradise to their hearts and over the moon to be back for more. 

He added "Our fantastic cast and crew are hard at work to bring another series of humour, heart and of course some properly puzzling cases to audiences, all set against the beauty of Devon and Cornwall - and of course to let everyone experience Shipton Abbott at Christmas!"

An eagle-eyed fan spotted film crews setting up in South Devon, for filming of the Christmas special. South Devon Railway and ticket office can be seen in the pictures posted on July 5 and captioned "Filming for Beyond Paradise going on in South Devon today." 

What will Beyond Paradise season 2 be about?

Although executives are usually tight-lipped about unseen plotlines, they have teased a crime involving a steam train, an arson attack, and a missing person.

Expanding on this, the official statement reads "Filmed in picturesque locations around South-West England in Devon and Cornwall, the new series features the same joyful escapism, humour and mind-boggling cases fans have come to adore since series one. Shipton Abbott’s new detective inspector will be tasked with solving a shocking crime on a steam train, an arson attack predicted by a medium and the baffling disappearance of the local fishing legend."

As viewers settle in for the penultimate episode tonight on BBC, many are feeling sad at the prospect of the series coming to an end and want to know whether a Beyond Paradise season 2 is in store. We've shared everything to know so far.

Will there be a season 2 of Beyond Paradise?

The BBC have yet to confirm whether a second series of Beyond Paradise will happen. However, show creator and writer Tony Jordan has admitted he's already began work on a possible season 2.

"I’ve started writing. I don’t wait for it to be commissioned," he said in an interview with BT. "We have loads of stories we couldn’t use in series 1. And Tim (producer Tim Key) has a long-held ambition about filming on a steam train. Not that he’s a nerd or anything. If there’s a season 2, there will definitely be an episode on a steam train."

Viewing figures have certainly been strong for Beyond Paradise season 1. So it's safe to say that fan interest is there. The opening episode of Beyond Paradise drew in 4.4 million viewers on February 24 - securing a million more viewers than ITV show Coronation Street.

In terms of what we could expect from a season 2, the show couldn't really happen without lead stars Kris Marshall and Sally Bretton reprising their roles. We can be sure that crime will definitely remain on the menu if a season 2 goes ahead. Though notably, none of the crimes Humphrey has to solve are murders - and it's for a very good reason.

In an interview with HELLO!, Kris Marshall explained: "With Death in Paradise, the clue is in the title. We do have death in Beyond Paradise but we don't have murders because it needed to be a completely new show, otherwise it would be really lazy to just do a show where you plonk it in Devon and Cornwall."

With the Beyond Paradise season one finale just a week away, we'll have to see whether the show ends on a cliffhanger or not, to see if that gives any hints on the likelihood of a season 2.

Could there be a Beyond Paradise and Death in Paradise crossover?

There's more exciting ideas being thrown around behind the scenes of the Beyond Paradise and Death in Paradise franchise. Asked whether there could be a crossover between the two shows, producer Tim Key replied: "The potential is there".

"Universe is the right word. You need to believe the two shows could feed into each other. We’ve been so lucky to work on the show with people we’re still friends with and there isn’t anyone we wouldn’t want to work with again."

Kris Marshall has also made it clear that he'd love to get all former and current Death in Paradise detectives together in some capacity too. This would include fellow actors Ben Miller, Ardal O’Hanlan and Ralf Little.

"I think it would be awesome to have all four detectives in one show together. Where their worlds collide," he said, adding: "I would love to see Dwayne (Danny John-Jules) again. Humphrey and Dwayne had a wonderful relationship together."

He also expressed an interest in the "marvellous" Don Warrington being involved too - who plays Commissioner Selwyn Patterson on the flagship show.

"I’d love them all back," Kris said. "I had a wonderful time with those guys."

We're nearly half way through the Death in Paradise spin off and fans already can't get enough of the series. Audiences have enjoyed seeing Kris Marshall and Sally Bretton return to screens as DI Humphrey Goodman and his fiancee Martha Lloyd. Yet this time around their adventures are a million miles away from the sunny island of Guadeloupe, instead taking place in a popular UK-based location where Beyond Paradise is filmed.

Amongst questions around the cast, viewers are asking will there be a Beyond Paradise season 2? There's been a few exciting updates from the cast and crew about this and we've shared all there is to know.

What is the Beyond Paradise theme tune?

The Beyond Paradise theme tune is performed by British folk band Bellowhead. It was created by composer Magnus Fiennes, who was also behind the theme tune for Death in Paradise.

Magnus - who is the brother of actors Ralph and Joseph Fiennes - described the Beyond Paradise theme tune as "spooky, funny, mysterious and moving" on Twitter.

The Beyond Paradise theme tune did not debut until the second episode was released on xx. Tim Key, Executive producer of the series shared on Twitter that they "did something different" in episode one. "Title sequence arrives in ep 2 complete with @bellowheaduk’s amazing theme music. Working with them and @magnusfiennes has been one of the biggest joys of this adventure," he confirmed.

Key opened up on the importance of getting the music right for Beyond Paradise, in an interview with WhattoWatch. "The music is a huge part of the success of the show, which immediately takes you to a specific place. I have become obsessed with bringing a music identity to Beyond Paradise. 

"We are lucky to be working with Magnus Fiennes after working with him on Death in Paradise," he continued. "We have worked hard to bring a modern, folk influence to the show, making a unique sound which I am really excited about. And getting Bellowhead on board was amazing."

The Beyond Paradise theme tune received largely positive reviews online. Show fan Michelle declared on Twitter: "I loved it very West Country toe tapping music". Whilst another Twitter user wrote: "Ooh I love it.  Very sea shanty. Xo."

Beyond Paradise music - further details

SoundtrackI have collated together some of the songs that make up the Beyond Paradise soundtrack, performed by artists including Michael Kiwanuka, Pentagon and Nathan Evans.

Composer Marcus Fiennes confirmed via Twitter that the soundtrack is not currently available on music streaming platforms, but they are hoping to change this in the future. "We're looking to put up Spotify playlists of songs from Beyond Paradise and Death In Paradise very soon."

Marcus also revealed that a family member contributed to the vocals. "That's my daughter Cheyenne singing. Written for the episode," he tweeted. 

Marcus shares 26-year-old daughter Cheyenne and 25-year-old daughter Shanti with wife Maya - who is also a musician.

Why isn't BBC's Beyond Paradise on tonight?

BBC's Beyond Paradise isn't on tonight because the broadcaster has agreed to air its annual Comic Relief coverage from 7pm to 10pm therefore Beyond Paradise won't air at 8pm. The big fundraiser is being hosted by a variety of stars including Aj Odudu, David Tennant, Joel Dommett, Paddy McGuinness and Zoe Ball.

The official Twitter page for the show tweeted, "We won't be here next week - it's Comic Relief! - but don't worry, Beyond Paradise will be back on BBC One on Friday 24th."

One fan said, "Another great episode tonight. It will be a relief when it's back in two weeks and, hopefully, the BBC will commission more series."

Another viewer was understanding and added, "Aww, next episode looks really really good but Comic Relief is a great cause and we get to see more Tennant."

And a third fan wasn't happy with the decision, they tweeted, "Boo... couldn't it go on the other side?!"

When will Beyond Paradise return?

Beyond Paradise will return to screens on Friday, 24th March when the fourth episode will be aired. Fans will see DI Humphrey investigate the death of an unidentified body which is discovered in a centre of a crop circle, leading conspiracy theorists to speculate alien involvement. Meanwhile, Martha's restaurant is reviewed by an influential food critic.

There's a reason the tropical BBC show is such a hit with audiences. From the stunning Death in Paradise filming locations to the gripping crimes - but topping the list is the all-star cast of course, who keep us entertained series after series. Currently heading up the Honoré police force is DI Neville Parker played brilliantly by Ralf Little. The popular Mancunian found himself down on his luck in the season 12 finale - and with Little having been at the helm for four series - some were worried that an exit was nigh (given the history of the last three detective departures).

Thankfully with the confirmation of Death in Paradise season 13 comes some clarity on Little's future on the show. We've shared whether he'll be back for another installment, as we settle in for Beyond Paradise episodes during the show's usual hiatus.

Is Ralf Little leaving Death in Paradise?

No, Ralf Little is not leaving Death in Paradise in 2023 - with the actor confirmed to appear in this year's Death in Paradise Christmas special and season 13 and 14 of the hit BBC show.

Fans were worried a departure was imminent after Little's character DI Neville Parker was wrongly arrested in the season 12 finale. Despite his name being cleared the detective was delivered another blow when it turned out his love interest Sophie Chambers (Chelsea Edge) was actually the killer. "I think maybe it's time to call it a day," Neville said, contemplating his future on Saint-Marie. But alas the detective opted to stay in the sun for a bit longer - meaning Little will remain for season 13 of Death in Paradise and the confirmed 2023 Christmas special.

Following the finale, not one but two series of Death in Paradise was renewed, alongside the festive special. Of the news, Tim Key, Executive Producer of the show said: "The response to series 12 has been incredible, so we’re delighted that we’ll be heading back to Guadeloupe for at least two more series! 

"We’ve got an amazing and joyful Christmas special in store, and then series 13 begins with our 100th episode, so we’ve got plenty of surprises ready to celebrate that milestone. We’ve got huge plans for the future and can’t wait to get going again".

We've yet to hear what Ralf Little has to say about season 13 and beyond. The last time the actor discussed his future on Death in Paradise was in April 2021. Little told HELLO! Magazine: "I don’t have an end date in mind. I’ll definitely be coming back for this one [season 11] without question and look, I just love it.

"I love the show - I love being in the show. I love working on the show. I'm a fan of it. I just absolutely love it so I'm not in any hurry to finish. So who knows, I've got no plans either way. I'm certainly possibly the most well suited to it of all the detectives so far because I don't have the same family commitments," he concluded.

Appearing in season 13 and 14, let's hope this is a sign that Little's enthusiasm remains. But for now fans can rest assured that there's plenty more of Neville to come.

When did Ralf Little join Death in Paradise?

Ralf Little joined Death in Paradise in January 2020, half-way through season nine. Playing the role of DI Neville Parker, he arrived on Saint-Marie from Manchester ready to sort paperwork out for a death which wasn't what it seemed. 

Little replaced Ardal O'Hanlon's character of DI Jack Mooney. O'Hanlon left the show to focus on his stand-up career. In the show, his character DI Mooney returned to London to move back into the family home with daughter Siobhan (Grace Stone).

Little is the fourth Death in Paradise detective - and the longest serving one to date. Predecessor Ardal O'Hanlon stayed for four series, the same as Kris Marshall - aka DI Humphrey Goodman - who left Death in Paradise after four seasons. The original detective - Ben Miller's DI Richard Poole (who was met with a grisly death) left after two series.

Who could replace Ralf Little in Death in Paradise?

Whilst he's not leaving anytime soon, actor Ralf Little did tease that if he did decide to exit the show at some point, his replacement could be a female detective instead.

In an interview with Radio Times, Little discussed the "possibility" of a new female lead detective in Death in Paradise's future. He said: "The show is extremely positive and brave in its choices. And if they feel like that's the right next move, then that's what they’ll do. 

"The creative team at Red Planet knows that show so well now that they'll always make a decision based on what's good for the show, and what's good for the fan base. I certainly wouldn't rule it out. Never say never.

"'Never say never' implies that it’s unlikely," he added. "The honest answer is: I don't know. It's certainly a possibility. Whatever they decide, it’ll be a good decision."

Audiences have seen women make up the crime-fighting team at Honoré police station. Currently Shantol Jackson stars as Naomi Thomas - the sergeant to Little's DI Parker. Previously, in her stint in Death in Paradise, actress Joséphine Jobert starred as Florence Cassell, a detective sergeant aiding Parker in cases.

It has been confirmed that BBC crime drama Death in Paradise will return for both a 13th and 14th season. 

The final episode of season 12, which aired on Friday 24 February, cast doubt over the future of a certain DI Neville Parker - with many fans worrying that Ralf Little was leaving Death in Paradise after his character was faced with a wrongful arrest and the end of a romantic relationship. Thankfully though, the BBC have confirmed news of a return to the island of St Marie in the form of season 13, so the future certainly looks bright.

When will Death in Paradise season 13 be released?

While no official release date for Death in Paradise season 13 has been released, in a statement, the BBC let slip that it could be coming sometime in 2024. 

A statement announcing the show's upcoming seasons read, "In 2024, the series will continue to offer much-needed escapism."

Who will be in Death in Paradise season 13?

While there was a big question mark over Neville Parker's future on Saint Marie throughout season 12, the season finale confirmed that he would be remain on the island, which means Ralf Little will be back next season. 

Unless there is a big shake up that was not hinted at in the season 12 finale, Little will likely be joined by Don Warrington as the Commissioner, Shantol Jackson as DS Naomi Thompson, Tahj Miles as Officer Marlon Pryce, Ginny Holder as Trainee Darlene Curtis, and Elizabeth Bourgine as Catherine Bourday.

Viewers can also expect to see plenty of guest stars appearing on the show too. Season 12 welcomed big names such as Peep Show's Robert Webb and Silent Witness star Genesis Lynea to name just two. Considering the success of season 12, we can be sure that we will see many other TV personalities arriving on the island.

As for Chelsea Edge, who played Neville Parker's murderous girlfriend Sophie Chambers, her time on the show is likely over as her character was found guilty of murder. 

Death in Paradise season 13 plot

According to the BBC, season 13 of Death in Paradise "will continue to offer much-needed escapism, compelling whodunnits and perplexing puzzles, keeping viewers on their toes for years to come." Viewers can expect more of the show's alarmingly elaborate murder plots but whether or not we will get more insight into the team's personal lives is yet to be seen.

Season 12 followed some of the team's lives outside of their work, but the storylines never tangled into the bigger plot lines as much as they did in previous seasons. The big focus of series 12 centred around Neville's relationship with his killer ex-girlfriend Sophie, so we can fairly speculate that Neville might be struggling to find love again, but you never know.

Speaking about season 13, Shantol Jackson, who plays Naomi, revealed to HELLO!, "I can’t tell you anything just yet - I really can’t tell you anything just yet because I don’t know yet but I’m sure it will be just as amazing or even more for season 13. We’ve set a bar and I believe in going over the bar! We maintain or go over it, we don’t go below it! Expect season 12 or more." 

As Death in Paradise will return for both a 13th and 14th season, we have two feature-length Christmas special episodes also on their way. But whatever the plot, we can be sure that the show will bring even more drama to our screens as the show celebrates its 100th episode in the upcoming season. 

Executive producer Tim Key said in a statement, "We've got an amazing and joyful Christmas special in store, and then series 13 begins with our 100th episode, so we've got plenty of surprises ready to celebrate that milestone. We've got huge plans for the future and can't wait to get going again."

And now Sally Bretton is back in her famous role as the detective's fiancee in the all new and exciting Death in Paradise spin off. Filming for Beyond Paradise began in summer 2022 and viewers have been eager for the series to start, wanting an update on the relationship between one of Death in Paradise's favourite romantic pairings - they also want news of a Beyond Paradise season 2. 

As for her real life, it turns out that Sally Bretton has moved past her character's fiancee status and is married with children. We've shared what we know about the star's home life, alongside her career highlights to date.

Who is Sally Bretton's husband?

Sally Bretton is married to a professional photographer Lee. The couple live together in a house in Hertfordshire, which is where Sally was born and raised.

The 43-year-old likes to keep very tight-lipped about her personal life and doesn't mention her family in interviews. Sally is also not present on social media either, so there's no photos of her and her husband online.

Whilst we don't know much about Sally Bretton's husband, some may find it amusing that the actress married a man with the same name as her co-star and character's partner in BBC show Not Going Out. Sally plays Lucy to comedian Lee Mack's Lee in the long-running sitcom. 

Does Sally Bretton have children?

Yes, Sally Bretton and her husband Lee have three children together. Two of them are twins. Whilst we don't know the age of Sally's children it's understood they're young and the reason why the actress hasn't appeared in theatre productions of late.

In March 2020, Sally appeared as Margot Wendice in a production of Dial M for Murder at Glasgow's Theatre Royal. This is her last known theatre work to date. In an interview with Glasgow Times at the time, Sally explained that live performances were difficult when being a mother to little children.

"My children are still quite young, so I haven't done much theatre – touring is not a good fit with family life," she said, adding: "My children came up to Aberdeen for half term, which was fantastic – we had a lovely time. Even saw some dolphins, which was unexpected."

Sally Bretton: Career highlights to date

Sally Bretton is best known for her roles as Lucy Adams in BBC sitcom Not Going Out and as Martha Lloyd in BBC dramas Death in Paradise and Beyond Paradise.

Some may also recognise Sally Bretton from one of her early roles in The Office UK. Sally starred as Donna in four episodes - an intern at the company who's parents were friends of regional manager David Brent (Ricky Gervais). 

TV aside, Sally has also taken to the stage, playing Goneril in a production of King Lear at Shakespeare's Globe in 2008. Back in 2002 she was also nominated for a Best Actress award at the Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards, for her role in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

When Kris Marshall left Death in Paradise almost five years ago, Sally also quit the show. Now, reprising her role as Martha Lloyd in Beyond Paradise in 2023, Sally shared how the Death in Paradise spin-off will appeal to fans. 

"It has the quintessential, beautiful British countryside and that slice of the West Country way. You've got the crime, you've got the love, the relationships," she says.

"It’s funny in places, it's warm. I think that people will enjoy the escapism that we know from Death in Paradise, but we have our own paradise here."

He's back and leading the action in all new Beyond Paradise episodes - we've shared the details on lead actor Kris Marshall, from his wife to his children and more.

The Death in Paradise spin off has been a long time coming, so it's no wonder fans are happy to see it finally on screens and serving up some closer-to-home action. Swapping the sunny island of Guadeloupe for a popular UK-based location where Beyond Paradise is filmed, viewers are catching up on the lives of DI Humphrey Goodman and his fiancee Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton) - who got together in the sixth series of the show after a will-they-won't-they romance. As soon as the series finished airing, fans instantly wanted a Beyond Paradise season 2.

In real life, the actor has arguably a more stable love life than his famous Death in Paradise character, with a longstanding wife and children. We've shared what there is to know about Kris Marshall's family.

Who is Kris Marshall's wife?

Kris Marshall is married to wife Hannah Dodkins. The two tied the knot back in February 2012 in the actor's hometown of Wells, Somerset. They have been together for over 13 years.

According to the Daily Mail, Kris and Hannah started dating at the beginning of 2010. The Beyond Paradise actor then got down on one knee and proposed to Hannah in November 2011 - 18 months into their relationship.

Kris likes to keep details of his family life private. The actor rarely mentions his wife in interviews and does not have any known social media accounts.

It's thought that Kris and Hannah are a relatively low-key couple though. Talking back in 2011, he shared how the two wanted a small wedding. This was notably after Kris had filmed scenes for a wedding as Adam in the famous BT advert.

He said: 'Just filming the scene with the white tables and speeches made me feel ill. Even pretending to get married like that was awful. Fortunately my gorgeous fiancée feels exactly the same so we're going to do things very differently. We're not quite sure what but it won't be big.'

The ceremony took place at the Swan Hotel on a particularly snowy day. A spokesperson for the hotel confirmed to the Daily Mail at the time that the pair had wed in a civil ceremony carried out by a registrar in the hotel's garden room, watched by around 30 guests.

Does Kris Marshall have children?

Kris Marshall and wife Hannah share two children together - a daughter called Elsie and a son named Thomas. Elsie is aged nine and Kris's eldest child, whilst Thomas is six-years-old.

In an interview with the Daily Mail in August 2022, Kris revealed how his children have helped him with his lack of patience. "I was at my son's sports day the other day and it was very hot. I started to get a bit antsy, so I went over and sat with him and had the most enlightening conversation," he said. 

"Normally I'd have walked off somewhere or sat in my car. But I just had the most beautiful conversation with my boy. If I hadn't taken stock, I'd have lost that moment. Impatience robs of you of such moments."

Kris and his family live in Bath, Somerset. He was deemed a "local resident" by Somerset Live in 2019, when Kris was the guest of honour at a Yurt opening at Twerton Infant School.

The family haven't always lived in the South-West of England though, with Hannah and the kids relocating to the island of Guadeloupe with Kris when he was filming for Death in Paradise.

In a rare admission about his children in 2020, Kris told Lorraine Kelly that he left Death in Paradise for the sake of his family. "I realised I had to get my son to school. He was becoming a bit too Caribbean – he refused to wear shoes and would only drink coconut water and eat pineapple," the actor joked. 

"He was very good on the beach but not so good with Maths and English, so I decided that it was time to get him to school," he continued. "So the show had to go, really. But six months later I'm standing on a film set in a car park in Dagenham thinking at 4 o'clock in the morning thinking, 'Have I made the right decision?'"

It seems Kris didn't have to travel too far for Beyond Paradise, with filming taking place in his native region. Discussing how he found shooting the show, Kris said: "I'm a Somerset boy by birth and I grew up there as well. 

"Somerset is the next county along from Devon and Cornwall, so it's all part of the West Country and in my opinion it's the most beautiful part of the UK. It has everything; cider, cheese, countryside, amazing coastline."

Up until March 18, 2023, Kris was appearing in a play called Charlotte and Theodore at the Ustinov Studio in North East Somerset. "I am a West Country boy so anything that keeps me rooted in the West Country is great," he told ITV whilst promoting the production.

Kris Marshall: Career highlights to date

Kris Marshall came to prominence for his role as Nick Harper in BBC sitcom My Family. He's best known for playing DI Humphrey Goodman in BBC dramas Death in Paradise and spin-off Beyond Paradise, and for his role as Colin Frissell in 2001 romantic comedy Love Actually.

Some will also recognise Marshall for appearing in BT adverts from 2005 to 2011. In the adverts he played Adam to Esther Hall's Jane, which explored the two's growing romantic relationship and eventual marriage.

Most recently, Kris Marshall has appeared in the ITV period drama Sanditon. Starring alongside White Lotus cast member Theo James, the actor has played the role of Tom Parker for two seasons.

Fans are currently enjoying the arrival of Beyond Paradise on screens - a moment many viewers of the original BBC drama had been eagerly counting down to since being announced in June 2022. The series has some familiar faces in the cast - including Kris Marshall and Sally Bretton, who return as their famous characters in a popular UK tourist destination where Beyond Paradise is filmed. It's safe to say it's a slightly different location to where Death in Paradise is filmed but the light hearted humour and crime-solving quandaries remain.

As viewers settle in for the fifth instalment, many want to know how many episodes of Beyond Paradise there will be to enjoy (and if there's a Beyond Paradise season 2?!). We've shared details on the total number and when they air.

How many episodes of Beyond Paradise are there?

Death in Paradise spin-off Beyond Paradise is made up of six episodes - each one lasting for approximately 60 minutes each. The series airs on BBC One on Friday nights at 8pm and is available on BBC iPlayer after the episode has been broadcast.

The total number of episodes was confirmed by Tony Jordan, writer and executive producer for Beyond Paradise. "Humphrey and Martha’s relationship is a drama in its own right, we follow their journey throughout the duration of the six episodes," he confirmed to Radio Times.

In the trailer we see the return of DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) - but in a slightly less sunny and tropical setting. Yet whilst solving crimes in a different location, it looks like fans can expect the same funny mishaps from the detective that made the character so popular with Death in Paradise fans.

"Wherever he goes, he leaves a sort of mini tidal wave of madness behind him and he's causing that tidal wave to ripple through the village of Shipton Abbott," actor Kris Marshall said of his role in Beyond Paradise.

What is Beyond Paradise about?

The official show synopsis reads: "Beyond Paradise follows DI Humphrey Goodman and his fiancée Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton) after their nail-biting will-they-won’t-they romance reached its emotional finale in 2017. Viewers were delighted when Humphrey took control of his destiny and followed Martha back from Saint Marie to London to declare his undying love for her.

"A new adventure awaits as we find them arriving in Shipton Abbott, Martha’s hometown near the beautiful Devonshire coast, having left London. As they embark on their new life, the couple are quickly thrown in at the deep end as Martha sets out to pursue her dream of running her own restaurant and Humphrey joins the local police force. Quickly making an impression on the somewhat eclectic team: DS Esther Williams (Zahra Ahmadi), PC Kelby Hartford (Dylan Llewellyn) and Margo Martins (Felicity Montagu), Humphrey sets out to help crack a host of baffling cases, with the Shipton Abbott squad witnessing a whole new approach to police work...

Touching on what Death in Paradise fans can expect from the spin-off, Kris Marshall said: "Beyond Paradise has the same sort of structure as Death in Paradise, but we're also a completely new show. There’s some of the favourite characters from Death in Paradise, but with a whole new spin on it. It's still paradise, it's just a different kind of paradise."

The arrival of the Death in Paradise spin off on BBC is a welcome respite for fans - especially those who never quite got over the departure of a certain Humphrey Goodman. Played to perfection by Kris Marshall, the loveable detective left Saint-Marie for love, leaving many heartbroken at the time. But 2022 brought the good news that Humphrey and fiancee Martha Lloyd (played by Sally Bretton) would be back in an all-new adventure in 2023.

Filming on Beyond Paradise began in Summer last year and now in February 2023, audiences are finally able to see the duo back in action. But first, a quick refresher on when Kris Marshall left Death in Paradise for good and the reason behind his departure.

When did Kris Marshall leave Death in Paradise?

Kris Marshall quit his role as Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman in Death In Paradise in February 2017. He left after season six, following four years on the show.

Kris joined the show in 2014 during the third series of Death in Paradise to replace Ben Miller's character - DI Richard Poole.

Following the news of his departure, fans took to Twitter to share their sadness. "Still really upset about kris marshall leaving death in paradise, just going to watch the whole series on repeat," tweeted @HarrietxWalton. Whilst another user posted: "I can't believe Chris Marshall is leaving death in paradise 😭😭😭 barely got over Ben Millers death    😩😩😩💔💔💔."

Which episode does Humphrey leave Death in Paradise?

Kris Marshall's last episode as DI Humphrey Goodman was in series 6, episode 6. In the season finale, Humphrey decided that he couldn't continuing living without Martha and returned to London to be with her.

Martha (played by Sally Bretton) first appeared on the show during season five, episode 6. An old friend of Humphrey's, she bumps into him on the island of Saint-Marie. Sally continued in her role as Martha for season 5 and 6. At one point, Humphrey and Martha even move in together, but Humphrey's hopes are dashed when she decides to return to London.

Luckily, Humphrey's relocation leads the two to rekindle their relationship in the UK. 

All-new Beyond Paradise picks up on the couple's life together post-Saint Marie, with the two living together in Shipton Abbott, Martha’s hometown near the beautiful Devonshire coast.

Why did Kris Marshall leave Death in Paradise?

Kris Marshall's decision to leave Death in Paradise was down to the actor wanting to spend more time with his family. Kris and his wife Hannah agreed that he would star in the show until it "became impractical". 

In an interview with Radio Times, the now 49-year-old said: "It's something my wife and I discussed three or four years ago. When I was first offered the job, my son was six months old and my wife wasn't working, so it was a very easy decision. We decided I would do Death in Paradise for a few years until it became impractical.

"It was always quite a finite thing. I certainly didn't hide it from anyone I work with. I'm going to miss it terribly. There have already been times when I've thought to myself, 'Have I made the right decision?'"

In an interview with Lorraine Kelly, Kris also joked that he was leaving the show for his son's education. "I realised I had to get my son to school," he told her. "He was becoming a bit too Caribbean – he refused to wear shoes and would only drink coconut water and eat pineapple." 

The comment recently resurfaced and led to some backlash from fans in July 2021. In a statement shared with HELLO! magazine, Kris apologised for his words. "I expressed part of this in an uneducated and poor manner and in doing so, I unintentionally hurt people I care about and caused offence to others," he said. 

"For this, I am deeply sorry. In my naive use of words, I propagated negative cultural stereotypes, which was offensive and insensitive. I now understand the damage this type of ignorant language, when used by a privileged white man like myself, can have."

At the time of his leaving in 2017, Kris touched upon his sadness in another interview - this time on Good Morning Britain. "I've done four years. It's been an absolutely amazing show. I've loved it," he said. "But it's time to move on and give someone else a chance to enjoy some sun."

Who replaced Humphrey in Death in Paradise?

After Kris Marshall quit Death in Paradise, his character was replaced by the arrival of a new detective - Jack Mooney (Ardal O'Hanlon). The Irish actor - known for his role in Father Ted - made his debut as Jack in series six, episode 5.

Jack is brought to the island of Saint-Marie to help the Honoré Police Station on a case in the latter part of season 6. Whilst staying with Martha back in London, Humphrey invites Jack and his daughter Siobhan to stay in his shack and continue to assist the island's police force.

Jack helps the team at Honoré Police Station solve a murder case that is re-opened eight years later. After this Commissioner Selwyn Patterson asks Jack to stay as the permanent Chief of Honoré Police. Widowed Jack eventually agrees after getting his daughter's blessing to stay.

But amidst the good news of Death in Paradise season 13 comes the ever better news of Beyond Paradise's arrival on screens - a spin-off the original series that features some familiar faces.

Just like TV viewers are eager to know where is Death in Paradise filmed, now the same question is being asked of the upcoming new show, which sees Kris Marshall return to his role as DI Humphrey Goodman, alongside Sally Bretton as his fiancée Martha Lloyd. Only in this series they've returned to the UK, and viewers already want to know if there will be a Beyond Paradise season 2. 

Where is Beyond Paradise filmed?

Beyond Paradise is filmed in locations across Cornwall and the South West of England. During filming, the cast were spotted in Looe, the Tamar Valley, Bere Ferrers and Weir Quay. 

Filming also took place at Port Eliot House and Gardens, in the parish of St Germans, Cornwall, and the estate is said to be a key shooting location for the series. Meanwhile, the Guildhall in Looe was turned into the police station for the show, and scenes were also shot at Pentillie Castle and Estate.

Speaking to Radio Times, the series' writer Tony Jordan said the show will look "100 per cent as beautiful as Death in Paradise", with the team having filmed in "glorious Devon". He added, "You know what? It may rain less, because we film in the rainy season in Guadeloupe."

When comparing filming in Cornwall with the tropical island of Guadeloupe, leading man Kris Marshall added, "It's a very different heat. Also when it's hot in England, it's joyful. Although it was hot on occasion, the main differences are there's no mosquitoes, not yet anyway, down South West. There's no bitey things, a few jellyfish, but that’s a welcome difference."

Where is the house used in Beyond Paradise?

D.I. Humphrey's house in the show can be found on Pentillie Estate, and is filmed at the riverside cottage and quay there.

Pentillie Castle explain on their website how they came to be a filming location: "Fortunately for us, the location manager was looking for riverside and rural cottages, woodland pathways, derelict buildings, and a quay. All these spaces have already been seen in episode 1, so we should probably leave you guessing at this point - we don’t want to be accused of any spoilers!"

Where is the bridge in Beyond Paradise?

In September Kris Marshall and the rest of the crew were spotted by a bridge in Looe town centre, before moving to the fire station and then The Sail Loft restaurant, according to local resident Allan Collins, who spoke to Cornwall Live. 

The bridge, which is aptly named 'Looe Bridge', was built in the 1850s and is Grade II listed.

Where is Beyond Paradise set?

The Death in Paradise spin-off is set in Shipton Abbott, Devon. The series picks up after D.I. Humphrey Goodman followed fiancée Martha Lloyd back to London, and now the pair find themselves in Martha's home town.

The BBC has said the series will see the pair temporarily living with Martha’s mum Anne Lloyd (Barbara Flynn), and the couple are quickly thrown in at the deep end as Martha sets out to pursue her dream of running her own restaurant and Humphrey joins the local police force.

Shipton Abbott is a fictional town, and though it's set in Devon in the show, Beyond Paradise is actually filmed in Cornwall.

Kris Marshall said: "I'm from South West anyway, from Somerset, so born and bred, and so I know that area of the world extremely well. You sort of feel a bit more at home, I guess."

But despite being closer to home, he continued that the "day to day challenges are the same." He said: "You're still filming sort of 60,70 hours a week. Those challenges remain, but they're great fun. I love it, the best job in the world."

Why was Devon chosen as the location for Beyond Paradise?

Executive producer Tim Key described the South-West coast as matching the "spirit and DNA" of Saint Marie from Death in Paradise.

He said: "We left Humphrey and Martha in the UK and we did talk early doors about where abouts that might be.

"It was about the DNA of the Death in Paradise universe, and it needed to be somewhere beautiful and somewhere that felt a bit different.

"It needed similarities with Saint Marie, but also its own personality and identity. Devon and the South-West just felt like the perfect place."

Kris Marshall told Radio Times that he believes the South West is the most beautiful part of the UK. He said: "It has everything; cider, cheese, countryside, amazing coastline."

He added that his favourite spot in the region is Kynance Cove in Cornwall. "It's like a smuggler's paradise down there," he said. "The sand is white and there's crystal clear blue sea. If it wasn't so cold, you would think you were in the Caribbean."

The murderous island of Saint Marie will be back on our screens this Christmas, with viewers wanting to know when is the Death in Paradise Christmas special?

Death in Paradise got its first-ever seasonal special last Christmas and it was such a success that we can now look forward to another in 2022. The gripping whodunnit has so far run for 11 seasons and proved itself to be enduringly popular with viewers - so much so that many want to know where is Death in Paradise  filmed - and it even has it's own spin-off show, and viewers are also keen to know where Beyond Paradise is filmed.

When is the Death in Paradise Christmas special?

The Death in Paradise Christmas special 2022 will air on Sunday 26 December - Boxing Day - at 9pm on BBC One. After this, it will be available to catch up on via BBC iPlayer too.

Ralf Little, who plays leading character DI Neville Parker, has said of the festive episode: "It feels special, being on TV at Christmas. I've been lucky to do it a few times with The Royle Family, and I'm very happy to be doing it all over again".

Executive producer Tim Key added: "We had been wanting to do a Death In Paradise Christmas special for years, and so to be starting production on our second one this year is brilliant. We’ve got a fantastic story which comes loaded with all the mystery, intrigue and surprise that our fans love to see."

Along with the festive special, the BBC has also announced when Death in Paradise season 12 will start, with the upcoming series premiering on Friday January 6. 

Death in Paradise Christmas special 2022 plot

Both the BBC and the cast have said that the Death in Paradise Christmas special will be "spooky". The plot sees a true crime podcaster is murdered during one of his investigations.

Executive producer Tim Key has said of the episode: "We’ve got a fantastic story which comes loaded with all the mystery, intrigue and surprise that our fans love to see.

"The special has a Ghost story Christmas feel to it. I think people are going to really like it. It's not designed to scare the kids, but it's unsettling, like Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol."

Cast member Tahj Miles, who plays officer Marlon Pryce, confirmed the "spooky" theme in an interview BT, saying: "It was described as spooky in the script, but when we actually got to this haunted house, it really was something. I was pretty convinced it was haunted. I love horror movies and spooky movies, so I loved that. That was my first opportunity to live out my horror movie dream – it was less spooky for me and more just great fun."

Meanwhile, Don Warrington, who plays the Commissioner, revealed: "We explore a character's past with the Ghost of Christmas past format… and there are many ghosts! That was fun to explore, fun to play. It allows all the characters to go somewhere different. It packs a punch and like all good stories has power."

And it sounds like there might be a bit of romance in the festive episode too. The end of the most recent series saw Neville enter the dating world by posting his profile in the final episode, after failing to win Florence's heart. But we think Neville might be moving on in the Christmas special, as the BBC teased he may have found love in an airport car park.

They said: "Christmas in Saint Marie takes a spooky turn this year when an old case of Selwyn’s comes back to haunt him following the murder of a true crime podcaster on the hunt for a missing child. Marlon is forced to spend the night in a haunted house and Darlene takes a hard look at her life choices. And after a chance encounter in an airport car park, could love finally be in the air for Neville Parker?"

Where is Death in Paradise filmed?

Death in Paradise is filmed across the islands of Guadeloupe, an overseas territory of France located in the eastern Caribbean Sea. So, while the island and the town where Death in Paradise is set place are both fictional, the gorgeous locations you see on screen do exist.

Guadeloupe is made up of a butterfly-shaped collection of five islands. The island’s official website shares all kinds of exciting things you can do while visiting Guadeloupe, including getting married and going island hopping. 

Death in Paradise executive producer Tim Key previously told Express.com, “Not only is the island one of the characters in the show and not only is the town of Deshaies one of the main characters of the show, but about 50 per cent of our crew are from France or Guadeloupe. A lot of them are sort of family to us because we've known them for so long.”

And much of the on-screen talent is local too. While the guest stars often fly in from the UK, all of the supporting artists are local to the island, and the team works with graduates from a film school on Guadeloupe. Key told What to Watch "I think at the start they were slightly baffled by us, then when French TV started showing Death in Paradise it all made sense to them." 

Where is Death in Paradise set?

Death in Paradise is set on the fictional island of Saint Marie, in the town of Honoré. This imaginary island is supposed to be about a 10th of the size of neighbouring Guadeloupe.

Unlike Guadeloupe, Saint Marie is not French Overseas territory but British. However, it only came under British control in the seventies, and around 30 percent of its inhabitants are French - which explains the French accents you hear on the show. The main religions on the island are supposedly Catholicism and Voodoo, making for some interesting local festivals every year.

Does Catherine's bar exist?

The scenes of the beloved detectives sipping cocktails and discussing cases in Catherine's Bar are shot at a beachside restaurant called 'Le Madras' in Deshaies, Guadeloupe. So, while you won’t actually find Catherine herself running it, the bar is more than just a set.

Just like Catherine’s Bar, 'Le Madras' serves beer, cocktails and sensational seafood. It currently has a four-star rating on Tripadvisor and the many reviews left on the site reference the restaurant's part in the hit drama.

Élizabeth Bourgine, the actress who plays Catherine, has shared many snaps of the picturesque bar on her Instagram, so Death in Paradise fans know what to expect if they ever make the trip to see it.

Is Honoré police station a real police station?

In the real world, Honoré police station is not a police station but the Presbytery attached to the church of St Peter and St Paul. You can visit the place where the exterior shots of the police station are filmed, and the building's neighbours are more than welcoming to fans of the show.

“We get on very well with the priest, we’ve worked with him since the beginning,” producer Tim Key previously told What to Watch. 

Where is the Inspector’s shack?

The picture-perfect Inspector's shack can be found at La Perle Beach - which translates to 'Pearl Beach' - three miles north of Deshaies.

The shack is not quite as secluded as it might seem in the TV series, in reality there are several bars and restaurants as well as a car park nearby. Much like most of the filming locations in Death in Paradise, La Perle Beach is near the town of Deshaies, roughly a seven minute drive up the coastal road.

La Perle has an impressive five-star rating on TripAdvisor, with reviewers praising its beauty and the miles of unspoilt sand and palm trees.

Can you visit the Inspector's shack?

Unfortunately, the inspector's prime beach real-estate spot can only be found during filming months, and even then it is fenced off from the public beach. 

The wooden shack, which all four detectives have now inhabited, is simply a set constructed on a public beach. It's put up for the six months of filming but is then taken down for the rest of the year.

Tim Key told Radio Times, "We’ve had years where we’ve kind of left it to the elements, and then people were having parties in it at weekends, like tourists having parties. We were like, 'We have to secure this a little bit more now!'"

Where do the actors stay when filming Death in Paradise?

The Death in Paradise cast and crew are based in Deshaies for the six months or so each year that they film the series. Though a traditional fishing village, Deshaies boasts numerous restaurants and bars, and is surrounded by picturesque beaches perfect for snorkelling.

According to the Mirror, much of the cast and crew stay in the Langley Fort Royal Hotel, though some of the core cast who stay for the whole six months live in local villas with their families.

The hotel is situated a ten minute drive to the east of Deshaies, right on the Plage du Petit Bas Vent, and offers a spa, pool and a whole host of activities, including tennis, surfing, scuba diving and a kids club.

When was Death in Paradise season 12 filmed?

Death in Paradise season 12 began filming in June 2022, along with the latest Christmas Special. 

Leading man Ralf Little, who plays D.I. Neville Parker, shared the news on Instagram with a video of himself in Guadeloupe. The 42-year-old clearly enjoys his time on the island, as he's shared plenty more behind-the-scenes snaps already, including a video of him getting his hair ready for shooting, and another sharing the work of the art department.

And Little isn't the only cast member who relishes his time on the island. Speaking to HELLO! early this year, Joséphine Jobert, who plays Florence Cassell, said "Filming in Guadeloupe, it's amazing. The sceneries, the people, the vibe, the crew, it's like a family. During the weekends, we'll go and see waterfalls, swim in the sea, eat in good restaurants, and the weather is so lovely."

The 12th season was commissioned back in 2021, at the same time as the 11th, and Tim Key said in a press release "We are hugely proud of series ten and delighted we'll be heading back to Saint Marie to continue the story. Our amazing cast and crew have delivered against the odds this year and we can't wait to get going again – we've got huge plans for the future, with lots of surprises to come."

The date for Death in Paradise season 12 is yet to be announced, though it's thought that it will air in January 2023.

Yes, you can go on holiday where Death in Paradise if filmed. In fact, our very own writer Ellie Hutchings has visited some of the filming locations herself. Here's what she said...

Death in Paradise was a favourite family watch in my home, so when I headed to the island where it's filmed, Guadeloupe, back in 2018, I was intrigued to see how the crystal clear water and magical sunsets measured up in real life. 

We were staying right by Deshaies, slightly inland on top of hill with fantastic views out to sea, and just a ten minute walk from Plage de Grande Anse. The town itself was pretty and quaint, and it came alive at night as the bars and restaurant filled up.

Of course, we had to try Le Madras, the restaurant where Catherine's Bar is filmed. The food was delicious and boasted a variety of fresh seafood dishes and West Indian food, such as curried goat and bananas flambé.

Other Death in Paradise locations we checked out were Honoré Police Station and the Inspector's shack. To our delight, the film crew were on location during our stay on the island, so the shack was set up. Though the fence and tape around it stopped us from getting too close, the beach where it's situated - La Perle - was one of the most beautiful places we visited. 

All in all, Guadeloupe is a charming holiday destination, with stunning water falls, unspoilt beaches and (mostly) clear blue skies. If you're a Death in Paradise fan the trip is even more worth it - and don't worry, the murder rate is fictional too!

A Death in Paradise spinoff has been announced, starring Kris Marshall. Here’s everything we know about the exciting upcoming series titled Beyond Paradise.

Death in Paradise has seen viewers repeatedly tuning in throughout its 12 year run - and they've been treated to Death in Paradise Christmas specials too - enjoying a consistently positive critical response, with fans eager to know more, such as where is Death in Paradise filmed. 

Actor Kris Marshall starred in the long-running series between series 3–6, before being replaced by Ardal O’Hanlon, and now Red Planet Pictures have confirmed a brand new spinoff series for BBC and BritBox international. Beyond Paradise sees Marshall return to head up the series as his character DI Humphrey Goodman returns to work in the UK, and fans are keen to know more, from where is Beyond Paradise filmed to the show's release date and cast.

Beyond Paradise release date

Beyond Paradise will be released on Friday 24 February. It will be broadcast on BBC One and can also be watched on BBC iPlayer and BritBox - for which you can now get a seven day free trial.

The new show's arrival comes just as series 12 of Death in Paradise will be wrapping up, making it great timing for fans of the whodunit who will be searching for their next murder mystery fix. Filming began in August 2022, with the cast and crew seen working in locations across Cornwall and the South-West of England.

What is the Death in Paradise spin off Beyond Paradise? 

The Death in Paradise spin off will focus on Humphrey’s life in the UK, after he left the Caribbean with girlfriend Martha to return to London. 

The new series is sure to appeal to fans, with many wondering what happened to Kris Marshall’s character DI Humphrey Goodman when he left sunny Saint Marie.

Speaking to the BBC about reprising his role, Marshall said that he’d always wondered what happened next for his character. About stepping back into Goodman’s shoes, he said: "it's a joy to be putting his crumpled jacket back on and seeing how life has panned out for him back in the UK." 

Executive Producer Tim Key added to the enthusiasm for the series by saying, "We always knew there were more Humphrey Goodman tales to be told and with the brilliant Tony Jordan leading the writing team, bringing all the Death in Paradise spirit, humour and joy to this brand new, original series, we can’t wait to get started." 

 What is Beyond Paradise going to be about? 

Beyond Paradise follows the lives of Humphrey and Martha after they have returned to the UK. After Humphrey followed Marth back to London in the 2017 series of Death in Paradise, the pair are now living in Martha's home town of Shipton Abbott in Devon.

The BBC synopsis reads: "As they embark on their new life whilst temporarily living with Martha’s mum Anne Lloyd (Barbara Flynn), the couple are quickly thrown in at the deep end as Martha sets out to pursue her dream of running her own restaurant and Humphrey joins the local police force. Quickly making an impression on the somewhat eclectic team; DS Esther Williams, PC Kelby Hartford and Margo Martins, Humphrey sets out to help crack a host of baffling cases, with the Shipton Abbott squad witnessing a whole new approach to police work…

"Each week the team will face a new crime with a unique puzzle at its heart. The not-so-sleepy town of Shipton Abbott will be rocked by an entire family disappearing without a trace, a woman claiming she was attacked by a suspect from the seventeenth century, the robbery of a highly prized painting, a body bizarrely discovered in a crop circle and a serial arsonist with a seeming distaste for local businesses.

"As Humphrey gets stuck into his new job, he and Martha must also navigate life’s ups and downs, as faces from the past, the decisions they make and challenges of setting up life in a new town put their relationship to the ultimate test."

Although it could be helpful to understand the backstory of the main characters, Beyond Paradise will be a brand new series that introduces new characters. It’s likely that although Death in Paradise references could be made, there will be no need to have seen it.

For those wanting to catch up on old episodes, all series of Death in Paradise can be streamed through BritBox or, alternatively, all episodes from the 12 series so far can be streamed for free through BBC iPlayer.
