After what the world believed to be the end of the much-loved Australian soap that started many stars' careers including Margot Robbie, Kylie, and Jason  Donovan, Neighbours is returning but not to TV. So, we answer; what channel will Neighbours be airing on in the UK?

Neighbours will air on Amazon’s Free ad-supported streaming service ‘Freevee’. The new series started on Monday 18th September 2023, and a new episode will be added to the site every day from Monday to Thursday. Picked up by Freevee after being dropped by Channel 5, Neighbours episodes airing times will still proceed to follow the old format.

Neighbours’ Twitter account confirmed the return of Guy Pearce reprising his role as Mike Young. 

Alongside Guy, other fellow cast members returning to our screens are Stefan Dennie as Paul Robinson, Alan Fletcher as Dr Karl Kennedy, Jackie Woodburne as Susan Kennedy, Ryan Moloney as Toadie Rebecchi and Rebekah Elmaloglou as Terese Willis. It is speculated that many more previous cast members will appear.

Along with the recurring characters, the 2023 series is showcasing many fresh new faces including Trevor the dog on The Neighbours of Ramsey St. 

Mischa Barton will star as Reece Sinclair, an American new to Erinsborough. Barton is best  known for her role in The OC as Marissa Cooper. The Varga-Murphy family will also be among the fresh faces flooding Erinsborough with Sara West as Cara Varga-Murphy, Riley Bryant as JJ Varga-Murphy, Naomi Rukavina as Remi Varga-Murphy and Marley Williams as Dex Varga-Murphy. 

 Have David, Nicolette and Aaron left? 

Aaron, David and Nicolette were intertwined in some of the major storylines during what everyone thought to be the end of Neighbours. But now, returning after the show was picked up by Freevee, it seems these three were left behind. 

During an Instagram live, Charlotte who plays Nicolette revealed that producers asked her to return but she has decided to move on with her career. However the character of Nicolette will remain with a new actor stepping in to take over the role.  Much like his co-star Charlotte, Actor Takaya Honda who starred as David Tanaka from 2016-2022, has taken a new role in The Gift that gives. Fans have pointed out that Matty Wilson, who played Aaron, has been spotted by keen eyed viewers in the background of a trailer released by prime but his return is yet to be confirmed.  

With Neighbours returning, you may be wondering  why neighbours finished  in the first place.  

Neighbours fans were delighted to hear that the Australian soap is being revived for a brand new series, but the question on everyones' lips is when is Neighbours coming back? As its return month is finally confirmed.

Four months after it was axed fans of the popular soap were told that it would be making a comeback, despite its last episode airing on July 29th on Channel 5 because he show was unable to find extra funding and Fremantle was unable to find a new production partner.

When is Neighbours coming back?

Neighbours is officially coming back for a new series in September 2023. The soap announced Facebook. Channel 10 shared, "Everyone's favourite Neighbours returns to screens this September" alongside a photo of Toadie Rebecchi (Ryan Moloney), Susan (Jackie Woodburne) and Karl Kennedy (Alan Fletcher). 

And Neighbours official Twitter shared the news with stars Annie and Candice addressing fans in a video message and fans are delighted.

One fan tweeted, "Finally the news we wanted to hear"

Another fan put, "My favourite tv show returns for autumn. What’s not to love."

And a third fan added, "No pressure but my birthday is Sept 1st and it coming back on my birthday would be the best birthday ever." 

Back when it first announced its surprise comeback, the soap revealed, "New home, NEW Neighbours… and plenty of old ones too. That’s right! #Neighbours will return for a brand-new series in 2023 exclusively alongside thousands of episodes from previous seasons to stream for free!"

The new series is still being filmed and will see the return of much-loved characters including; Stefan Dennis as Paul Robinson, Alan Fletcher as Karl Kennedy, Jackie Woodburne as Susan Kennedy and Ryan Moloney as Toadie Rebecchi.

And there are some new faces coming to Erinsborough. Neighbours shared, "Meet your new Neighbours! Cara and Remi Varga-Murphy will be moving to Ramsay Street with their sons, JJ and Dex when Neighbours returns THIS SEPTEMBER! We can't wait to welcome Sara West, Naomi Rukavina, Riley Bryant and Marley Williams to the show."

Freemantle CEO said, "Neighbours is a unique series with a powerful connection with its fans across the world. We cherish the show and all those who have been part of its incredible story over many decades, so we are thrilled that we have found a new home.”

Meanwhile Amazon Freevee announced to its followers, "Surprise! has a new home on Amazon Freevee! Re-explore the lives, loves and challenges of your favourite residents from Ramsey Street. Thousands of iconic episodes and a brand-new series coming 2023!"

And stars from the show like Jason Donovan have tweeted their delight at the news, he put, "Neighbours has helped shine a light on Australian culture, provided endless opportunities for our industry and kept fans entertained for decades! Thrilled to hear that will return to our screens 2023."

Is Neighbours coming back on Amazon?

Yes, fans will be able to watch the new series of Neighbours for free online via Amazon Freevee. Amazon has announced that it will be airing new series of Neighbours and also hosting the show’s back catalogue, giving viewers access to 37 years’ worth of classic episodes.

“Neighbours has captivated its audience for nearly 40 years, building a dedicated and loyal following for the lives and stories of the characters on Ramsay Street,” said Lauren Anderson, Amazon’s head of AVOD programming.

“With the power of streaming, we’re able to offer thousands of Neighbours episodes for new audiences to discover this legendary series – and current fans to relive their favourite moments," she added.

Where is Home & Away filmed?

Home & Away is filmed in Palm Beach, Sydney, New South Wales and Redfern and has been the location ever since the series started in 1988. It's understood that the production crew loves how well it captures the beauty of New South Wales while making a picture-perfect fictional town.

There are two main locations where Home & Away is filmed - one is the studio in Redfern and the other is Sydney's Palm beach where most of the outdoor scenes at Summer Bay are filmed.

While there is no public access to, or tours of, the Redfern studios, the outdoor sets (Palm Beach) are accessible to the public.

Are the houses in Home & Away real?

The houses in Home & Away are not real, except for the Summer Bay House which is located on the Jackaroo Ranch, north-west of Sydney.  Meanwhile, the soaps famous Pier Diner is actually the Boat House Palm Beach and on warm, clear days it has long queues with fans and locals waiting to taste its plentiful, contemporary menu that is said to be worth the wait.

Where is the caravan park filmed in Home & Away?

The caravan park in Home & away is filmed on the Jackaroo Ranch, north-west of Sydney. The original house and adjacent caravan park was destroyed in a real-life bush fire back in December 2002 so stock footage of the house exterior had to be used instead until 2015 when a replica of the house was built on the same land as the original.

New episodes of Home and Away are not on Channel 5 because the soap is still on its annual Christmas break to make way for the channel's festive films ahead of celebrating its 35th anniversary. To mark the milestone, the channel has  been airing Home and Away Classics: Celebrating 35 Years of the Legendary Soap from Monday 21st November. The show explained on its instagram, "An iconic episode from each of the years Home and Away has been on air will drop every weekday, starting right back at the beginning with the 1988 pilot!"

When does Home and Away return in the UK?

Home and Away will return in the UK on Monday, January 9th 2023, bosses of the show confirmed the details of the show's return on its official Twitter. The announcement reads, "1 week till we are BACK on your screens #HomeandAway Returns 7pm Monday Jan 9 #oneweektogo".

And fans are delighted with the announcement. One wrote, "So glad to have it back on my tv x" 

Another fan put, "Been watching old episodes on my 5 in the meantime"

And a third fan asked, "Who's this fella?" as the show's return was accompanied with the photo of a cast member.

Is Home and Away on a break 2022?

Yes, Home and Away is still on its annual Christmas break where it won't be airing new episodes so that its broadcaster, Channel 5, could air Christmas films over the festive season and early new year.

Home and Away traditionally takes a break in the UK and Australia as it's usually only commissioned for a certain number of episodes per year, usually around 230.

This equates to 46 weeks' worth of Summer Bay drama, if the show airs in a five-episodes-per-week scheduling pattern.

And with 52 weeks in a year, the show is taken off air for six weeks.

Has Home and Away stopped for a break?

Yes, Home and Away has stopped for a break on Channel 5 but the broadcasters of My5 are celebrating 35 years of the soap and are airing classic old episodes not on the streaming service. Episodes fans can watch includes one featuring Tom and Pippa Fletcher who fostered five children when they were unable to have children of their own. The government wanted to take the children. So they sold up and bought a run-down caravan park in Summer Bay. 

Why is Home and Away finishing?

Home and Away is only finishing for a few weeks - and will be off air for a further week, before returning with new episodes airing from January 9th, despite fears from fans that the show could be axed like Neighbours was earlier this year before its sensational return was announced.

At the time of Neighbour's last episode, Ben Frow, Channel 5’s head of programming, said:  “No. But I think it will be interesting to see what we do with it as we evolve. There might be somewhere else to put it in the 5 spectrum.

“But it’s a life-of-series deal, so it’s not going anywhere until the makers decide to cancel it.”

And for the planned break, Channel 5 bosses appear to have worked closely with the Home and Away team in Australia, as the final UK episode of the year ends on a dramatic cliffhanger.

This was also the case last year, when the final Channel 5 episode of the year featured the gas poisoning incident at Salt.

With the final episode of Neighbours airing on Friday July 29th after it was confirmed earlier this year that it was set to be axed due to funding issues, many of the soap's old faces are making a return.

The Australian soap has been running since 1985, airing on Channel 5 in the UK, and will draw to a close at 9pm on Friday with a 90 minute finale episode. Among the likes of iconic Neighbours stars such as Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, who famously played Scott and Charlene in the 1980s, returning for the last instalment, Hollywood bombshell Margot Robbie was also enlisted to return to her Aussie acting roots for the finale.

When was Margot Robbie in Neighbours and who did she play?

Margot Robbie starred in Neighbours from 2008 to 2011, playing the role of Donna Freedman and appearing on Ramsay Street for the first time aged 17. 

Margot's character of Donna was initially introduced temporarily, however Margot was quickly promoted to the main cast of the show, finding love with Ringo Brown, played by Sam Clark. 

Sam and Donna had an on-again-off-again romance before eventually marrying, however the Ramsay Street lovers split when Margot's character cheated with Andrew Robinson.

Speaking on the career-starting role in Neighbours, she once said, "Honestly when I got my first audition for Neighbours, that was a ‘pinch me’ moment and I haven’t stopped pinching myself since, because I still feel lucky every time I walk on a set."

Some Margot fans may be disappointed to find that her cameo in the Neighbours finale is short and sweet, with Donna making an appearance in the form of a video message.

When is the last episode of Neighbours on?

UK viewers can watch the last episode of Neighbours with a double-episode special on Channel 5 at 9pm on July 29. The finale will be an hour long in length. The soap confirmed that filming had officially wrapped on June 10, sharing a photo of the cast together on set for the last time.

The caption read "that's a wrap!" and featured stars including Ryan Moloney (Toadie) and Alan Fletcher (Dr Karl Kennedy) with his hair loss.

Filming has stayed in line with the schedule as bosses confirmed in March that "Neighbours will cease production in June".

One video surfaced on TikTok in May from a fan who believed to have capture Kylie and Jason on set as their respective Neighbours characters.

What has Kylie Minogue said about Neighbours being axed?

Kylie Minogue, who played Charlene on the soap, has tweeted her gratitude for the soap which helped launch her pop career. She wrote, "I’ll be forever grateful for the experience & the friends I made on @neighbours."

Continuing her tribute, she penned, "We had no idea how big the show would become and how passionately viewers would take it to heart. Pure love! 💞🏡 I can still hear Madge calling … CHARLENE!!!!"

When did Neighbours leave the BBC?

Neighbours left the BBC in February 2008 after airing on the channel for more than 21 years since its first episode back in October 1986.

At the time, the BBC said in a statement: "We have this afternoon formally withdrawn from the bidding for Neighbours.

"The BBC has had a long and fruitful relationship with Neighbours, which has transmitted on BBC1 for 21 years, and this has come to an end because of an unrealistic price demand.

"We do not believe that we could have justified to BBC viewers a price tag of what would have amounted to some £300m across the term of the contract. Paying that sum would also have compromised our ability to invest in new original programmes. We made a fair offer and are sad that we have not been able to reach terms with Fremantle."

Is Neighbours still on in Australia?

Yes, Neighbours is currently still on in Australia but just like in the UK this will only be on air until August 2022. Channel 10 continues its commitment to screen the show in Australia (having moved it a few years ago from the main channel to Ten Peach), but the budget for making the show (while tiny in TV terms) relies on the UK sale.

As a result the Australian soap will cease filming after 37 years after producers Fremantle failed to secure another UK broadcaster.

Who wrote the Neighbours theme tune?

The Neighbours theme tune was composed by Tony Hatch and the lyrics written by his then wife Jackie Trent. It was once voted the world's most recognisable theme tune. The vocals were originally recorded by Barry Crocker, who also recorded the updated version but since then subsequent versions have been recorded by a variety of artists.

What is Neighbours: The Farewell Tour?

Neighbour's production company FremantleMedia and live events company Maple Tree Entertainment have announced a special show coming to the UK to celebrate Neighbours and the end of an era. 

Fans will be able to meet and greet with some of the show's most popular stars and enjoy Q&A sessions.

Originally titled Neighbours: Live in Conversation, the show was set to come to London's West End in 2020 - but was ultimately cancelled due to the pandemic.

Now the rescheduled show - renamed Neighbours: The Farewell Tour - will be coming to the UK in March 2023, with seven additional dates added:

Alan Fletcher's hair loss explained

Alan Fletcher has revealed he has been diagnosed with alopecia areata - an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss. The 65-year-old actor recorded a special video message to reassure fans that he was OK, after he recently revealed his new bald look in an episode of Neighbours, prompting fans to raise their concerns about his health.

Alan said, "A lot of fans have expressed a little concern about my health on the internet, and there have been some media inquiries as well, so I just want to put something to rest,' he said in the video. 

"I am absolutely fine. I'm fit and well working on Neighbours and having a great time. But, I can report to you, I do have a disorder called alopecia areata."

Alan went on to explain how the disorder "causes patchy hair loss" so he decided to just shave it all off. 

He added, "I started to lose hair into my beard and then on my scalp in patches. So eventually I shaved my beard off, and then my hair became so patchy on my head, I had to get rid of most of that as well."

His character Karl can now be seen with a bald head on the soap, as episodes had been screening since June 2nd.

And he gave fans a glimpse of his new look, "I know a lot of you are going to be pretty shocked, but I have no problem with it. In fact, it's kind of fun," he continued and acknowledged that the condition can be "quite serious for people, particularly from an emotional point of view".

"Sudden hair loss is really troubling for a lot of people, and particularly for young people, who can be terribly bullied," he continued.

Alan ended the video by reassuring fans that he's 'absolutely fit and well', while also thanking them for their concern.

Why is Alan Fletcher bald? 

Alan Fletcher is bald because he shaved his head after being diagnosed with alopecia areata - an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss. He chose to shave his head because his hair became "so patchy". When he got his health diagnosis he was still filming for Neighbours and approached bosses to help write his hair loss into the soap after struggling to hide it any longer.

The 65-year-old actor explained how he tried to hide his diagnosis - an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss - by claiming his character Dr Karl Kennedy had a dodgy hair product fail.

"It was starting to get a bit weird. Karl was wearing caps all the time, so I went to the producers and literally said 'I need to have a little scene, just something wedged in that explains what's going on'," Alan explained.

"So we popped in a little scene where Karl comes out, with almost no hair, saying he's just used some dodgy hair product and he hasn't followed the instructions, and that is how we sort of explained it."

What causes Alopecia?

Alopecia (Hairloss) can be caused by heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions or a normal part of ageing, according to Mayoclinic. It can affect just your scalp or your entire body and can be either temporary or permanent. But while anyone can lose hair on their head, it's more common in men.

Why is Karl bald in Neighbours? 

Karl is bald in Neighbours because he used some "dodgy hair product and he hasn't followed the instructions" so his hair fell out. That is the explanation actor Alan Fletcher gave after urging writers to help him cope with his own hair change, as in real-life the actor Alan Fletcher has shaved his head after being diagnosed with alopecia areata - an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss and asked bosses to include some kind of hair loss to his character's storyline so that he didn't have to hide his own personal diagnosis anymore.

Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan re-release Especially For You to mark the final episode of Neighbours ahead of their return to the soap this month.

Neighbours is being axed, 37 years after the popular soap first hit screens.

The pop duo shot to the top of the charts back in 1988 when they teamed up musically to release the duet single following their on-screen success as Scott and Charlene in Australian soap Neighbours.

The pair, who at the time were a couple in real-life too, quit the popular soap to focus on their own music careers and the single was released as part of Jason's debut album Ten Good Reasons and was his first number one selling single - which sold over a million copies.

Kylie and Jason - who have since had successful solo careers since their rise to fame on the show - are looking to return to the number one spot once more as they reunite to bid farewell to Neighbours.

Kylie shared the exciting nostalgic news with her fans on Twitter when she tweeted, "Now we ARE back together on ‘Neighbours’, a limited run of ‘Especially for You’ with @JDonOfficial will be available on vinyl and cassette on 5th August to bring back more 80s memories!!”

And fans wondering when are Kylie and Jason are returning to Neighbours? can't wait for the re-release.

One fan tweeted, "That's fantastic news Kylie I have still got my original vinyls copies 7" & 12" from the 80s and the original CD single version too absolutely love this incredible duet with @JDonOfficial."

Another supporter put, "Omg I’ve still got my original 7” vinyl from its original release but I’m off to pre order this limited 7”vinyl and White Cassette now let’s get this back to number 1."

In real-life Jason is married to Angela Malloch and has three children, Jemma, 22, Molly, 11, and son Zac, 21.

Jason's daughter Jemma followed in his footsteps landing a role on the soap.

And Kylie is dating Paul Solomons but he previously revealed why she won't have children in an interview with the Sunday Times.

Reminiscing about what was to become a huge pop moment when the single first released, Pete Waterman told OfficialCharts.com, "This was one of those records that nearly never made it. We mixed it – then scrapped it – started a new one with only the vocals, had 6 hours to do it all, mix it, and get it to the factory! We did it and it went on to sell over a million. Those were the days!"

Neighbours will end with a double-episode special on Channel 5 at 9pm on July 29 and the re-release of Especially For You will drop on August 5th - with the limited edition single available for pre-order now.

Kylie and Jason have teased fans by giving them the first look at their on-screen reunion as they return to Neighbours ahead of its final episode.

The long-standing soap has been axed after 37 years but before it disappears from screens completely the cast - both old and new - have wrapped filming the final episodes ahead of them airing later this month.

As one of the UK's most-loved on-screen duos, Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, shot to fame playing Scott Robinson and Charlene Mitchell in the Australian soap and they've been pictured cuddled up on set as filming gets underway for their scenes in the final series. 

Jason shared the cute snaps to fans on his Instagram in which he captioned them, "So good to be back with this absolute legend @kylieminogue Scott and Charlene final scenes ❤️ @neighbours 🇦🇺 2022."

Jason can be seen wearing a blue checked shirt and jeans while Kylie compliments his casual look with her blue denim jumpsuit and has revived her signature curls.

And fans are going wild for the sneaky-peek as cameras start rolling.

Neighbours final episode storyline hints so far

While the Neighbours script has been kept underwraps, it was speculated by Popbitch Neighbours will conclude just as Charlene and Scott Robinson (Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan) make their grand return to Ramsay Street after over 30 years away.

The publication reported that duo will allegedly pull up in their car and exit the vehicle, taking a look around, before saying: ‘We’re home’.

In the photograph shared by Jason and Kylie you can see Jason is wearing his wedding ring, which could be a sign that the couple are as loved up as ever - or will there be a twist in true soapland style?

Nothing on the above speculation has been confirmed by show bosses.

However, other cast members who are confirmed to return for the final episode, include Peter O’Brien, who appeared in the show’s first episode as Shane Ramsay, as well as Ian Smith, who played Harold Bishop, Mark Little, who played Joe Mangel, and Paul Keane, who played Des Clarke.

Among those returning from the 2000s are Chris Milligan, who played Kyle Canning, Morgan Baker as Callum Rebecchi, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, who played Izzy Hoyland, and James Mason as Chris Pappas.

How did Kylie's character Charlene leave Neighbours?

Kylie's character Charlene left Neighbours in July 1988. At the time she was to start her apprenticeship at a garage in Brisbane. Scott (played by Jason Donovan) was to remain in Erinsborough while Charlene started her apprenticeship. They reminisced about the first time they met and then went to Lassiters Lake. But the following day, Charlene bade an emotional farewell to Erinsborough, hugged her mother Madge and drove out of Ramsay Street.

How did Jason's character Scott Robinson leave Neighbours?

Following Charlene's departure from the soap, Scott went to visit her in Brisbane in late 1988 then returned to Erinsborough. But he almost fell for another woman, Poppy Skouros with whom he was caught cuddling after a family bereveament. Madge warned that she would phone Charlene immediately but Scott told them the truth. And in May 1989, after Poppy decided to leave for Greece, Scott joined Charlene in Brisbane.

The couple went on to have a son Daniel Robinson in 1992. That year Madge decided to sell up and she moved to Brisbane to help Charlene with baby Daniel after her husband Harold Bishop had reportedly died when he was washed out to sea a year earlier.

Charlene and Scott later had a daughter Madison Robinson in 1995. And a year later, Harold Bishop was said to be alive, he was reunited with Madge and Madge moved back from Brisbane to Erinsborough but she died of cancer in 2001. 

Charlene did not attend her funeral so these new finale episodes will be the first time she has returned to screen.

Neighbours will end with a double-episode special on Channel 5 at 9pm on July 29.

Neighbours fans are in for a treat after it was announced that Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan would be returning to Neighbours to film scenes in the Channel 5 soap before it's axed for good.

When are Kylie and Jason returning to Neighbours?

Kylie and Jason are returning to Neighbours for the show's very last episode, number 8,903, which is set to air on August 1, 2022. Bosses have kept the storyline details for the show under wraps but their return has been confirmed by the show's executive producer.

Jason Herbison announced the return of their characters, Charlene Mitchell and Scott Robinson, in a message on Twitter. He tweeted, "Scott and Charlene are the ultimate Neighbours couple and it would not feel right to end the show without them. We are thrilled that Jason and Kylie have come home to play a very special part in our series finale.

He added, "It has been an emotional experience for them, for us and I'm sure it will be for our viewers."

Kylie and Jason confirmed their involvement with the show be sharing an image of what appears to be a script. Kylie captioned it, "Who else is banging out #angryanderson yeah #suddenly … 🥰🥰🥰."

Meanwhile Jason simply uploaded the same snap and tagged Kylie "@kylieminogue"

And fans are delighted with the news.

One fan wrote, "Great news cannot wait for this epic ending with these two legends back Scott and Charlene especially for us."

When did Kylie and Jason leave Neighbours?

Kylie and Jason left Neighbours back in 1988 and 1989 respectively. The pair, who played onscreen lovers Charlene and Scott, soon became fan favourites when their romance bloomed and when they got married the episode attracted two million viewers in Australia - and 20 million in the UK.

Kylie decided to leave the soap first in 1988 to concentrate on her music career, meanwhile Jason followed the year after with his exit to pursue a singing career. It was reported at the time that Jason signed a new contract with Network Ten that allowed him to leave the show earlier than his original contract stipulated.

Since then they've both gone on to have successful pop careers.

When news broke about Neighbour's future, Kylie tweeted, "We had no idea how big the show would become and how passionately viewers would take it to heart. Pure love! I can still hear Madge calling … CHARLENE!!!!" And Jason told BBC Breakfast that while it was a sad time, the show should be celebrated. He stressed, "I think it’s time to celebrate Neighbours. It’s kept my family employed for a long time to be honest! My daughter is in it, so is my dad. We should be grateful for what it’s given Australia, actors, producers, writers, directors."

Who else is coming back to Neighbours?

Aside from the return of Kylie and Jason, some other stars are coming back to film the final show including Olympia Valance. She played much-loved character Paige Smith and left the series in 2018 after four years. To confirm her attendance Olympia told Greek publication Neos Kosmos, "Neighbours has always felt like home to me. There is a reason why everyone refers to Neighbours as the best training ground in the world."

News that the show had been cancelled following the loss of it's main UK broadcast partner Channel 5, had left her "extremely sad"

"I feel like I grew up on Neighbours...it’s incredibly special to step back into the shoes of Paige as Australia farewells its most iconic television program,' she added.

But Olympia did not mention whether Holly Valance, her half-sister and fellow Neighbours alum, would be joining her in the finale.

It's the sunny overseas drama that drew in audiences of over 60 million back in the day. But sadly for soap fans the curtain has finally fallen on Neighbours - Australia's longest running daytime drama - after 37 years.

Viewers first started worrying that Neighbours was cancelled back in February following a major announcement by Channel 5, who show the soap in the UK. This was shortly confirmed by TV Bosses who announced a date for when the last episode of Neighbours would air. Several stars who first rose to prominence on the show returned for the finale - including Kylie and Jason. As audiences catch their last glimpse of Ramsay street we explained why Neighbours has finished, additionally looking back on some of the biggest names to appear in the show's history.

Why has Neighbours finished?

Australian soap Neighbours has ended as the show was unable to find alternative funding after Channel 5 decided to stop broadcasting it. Producers of the daytime show - Network 10 and Fremantle - confirmed the sad news that the final episode will air this June.

"It is with sadness that after nearly 37 years and almost 9,000 episodes broadcast, we are confirming that Neighbours will cease production in June,” a Fremantle spokesperson said. "Following the loss of a key broadcast partner in the UK, and despite a search for alternative funding, we currently have no option but to rest the show."

Alan Fletcher spoke out about filming the final scenes and revealed his hair loss.

Channel 5 caused a commotion in early February when it announced it would stop airing the show later this year. The news came as somewhat of a shock to some as the soap continues to draw in 1.2 million viewers a day in the UK. At the time Channel 5 said the the decision to drop the soap was to allow funding to be redirected to new UK dramas.

"Everyone at Neighbours has been overwhelmed by the love and support from the audience since the news came out," the show's producers continued. "The show has brought a sunny slice of Australia into the homes of millions of viewers around the world launching the careers of dozens of household names along the way.

"But as this chapter of Ramsay Street comes to a close, we promise to do everything we can to give the show the send-off it deserves."

Sources told The Sun in February that some of the soap's biggest stars could return for the final episode. According to the publication, 61-year-old Peter O'Brien who starred Shane Ramsay in the very first episode is one who will return along. He will joined confirmed returning cast favourites Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Margot Robbie. 

"There is a lot of hard work going on behind the scenes to make sure the final few weeks of Neighbours are truly special," the source said. "They are still waiting to hear back from a number of former stars but Peter has agreed to return and will start filming in May."

When did Neighbours first air?

The first episode of Australian soap Neighbours aired on 18 March, 1985. Audiences across the pond were introduced to Ramsay Street and it's residents the Ramsay, Robinson and Clark families. Though it was a full 18 months later - in 1986 - that British audiences caught their first episodes of the soap on BBC One.

After 2008, the series moved to Channel 5 where it has played in the UK ever since. The soap celebrated it's 30th anniversary in 2016, making it the longest running drama series on Australian television. Many now famous Australian actors credit the show with having launched their careers.

Liam Hemsworth played Josh Taylor (2007-2008)

Before becoming a Hollywood hunk, Australian actor Liam Hemsworth tread the boards in the country's beloved soap. Liam starred as Josh Taylor for two years. His charatcer was an athletic paraplegic who was left paralyzed following a car crash. He appeared in 24 episodes and was the love interest of Bridget Parker (actress Eloise Mignon).

Margot Robbie played Donna Freedman (2008-2014)

Yes this Aussie actress had a long stint on the show. And this was way before her critically-acclaimed performances in Wolf of Wall Street, I Tonya, Suicide Squad and Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood. Margot starred in over 300 episodes as Donna Freedman. Then aged 17, it was her first major acting role. "Before 'Neighbours,' I was working at Subway,” she said in a 2013 interview with the Australian Council of Trade Unions.

She was initially a guest star, but bosses promoted her to series regular later in 2008. Audiences followed the journey of the bisexual teen who shared a same-sex kiss with Sunny Lee (actress Hany Lee), later married Ringo Brown (actor Sam Clark) then had an affair with Andrew Robinson (actor Jordan Patrick Smith). She proved a hit with viewers and critics, bagging two Logies for the role.

Kylie Minogue played Charlene Mitchell (1986-1988)

Before she started 'Spinning Around' - Kylie Minogue was a little known name. She was first catapulted into the public arena for her role in Neighbours alongside on and off-screen boyfriend Jason Donovan. And it's safe to say a lot of Neighbours viewers credit the two for making it such a success back in the late 1980s. Kylie's Charlene Mitchell was only a character for two years but she drew in huge audience numbers. Take her wedding to Jason's Scott Robinson in a 1987 episode - which drew in an incredible 20 million plus viewers.

Shortly after, Kylie launched her singing career and the rest is history. The Grammy winner is officially the biggest-selling female Australian singer of all time. The songstress recently relocated back to her sunny birthplace and is currently dating boyfriend Paul Solomons.

Jason Donovan played Scott Robinson (1985-1989)

Jason has a whopping 559 episodes of Neighbours under his belt. And he's a huge part of the show's history too. Being one of the original characters who appeared in Neighbours first ever episode in March 1985. Starring as heartthrob Scott Robinson, a then 19-year-old Jason quickly earned a legion of adoring fans. And alongside co-star and girlfriend of the time Kylie, he helped cement Neighbour's international success. Like Kylie, Jason also had a successful singing career of the back of the show. But of course his most famous hit remains Especially for You. A love song sang as a duet with Kylie in December 1988.

No doubt, Jason is one ex-cast member who will be sad to see that Neighbours is ending. When news of it's potential demise surfaced in February, the Australian star tweeted his hopes that the show would be picked up by another network.

Russel Crowe - four appearances (1987)

New Zealand-born actor Russell Crowe had a very brief appearance in the hit Aussie soap. In 1987, he starred as Kenny Larkin - an ex prison mate of Henry Ramsay (Craig McLachlan). Sadly for Crowe fans he only starred in four episodes. He later went on to achieve Oscar glory in 2001 for the film Gladiator.

Chris Hemsworth - one appearance

He's the gorgeous Thor: Love and Thunder actor who is more known for starring in rival soap Home and Away as Kim Hyde between 2004 and 2007. However, Chris - older brother of Liam - did actually star in one episode of Neighbours. A nameless character he worked with Steph Scully (actress Carla Bonner) in a garage near the famous Ramsay Street.

Neighbours could be set to face the axe after nearly four decades as Channel 5 cancels the Australian soap.

Channel 5 confirmed the news and explained the money will be dedicated to investing in original British dramas.

According to SkyNews, a statement said, "Neighbours will no longer air on Channel 5 beyond this summer.

"It has been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we'd like to thank the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series.

"We'd also of course like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years.

"We recognise that there will be disappointment about this decision, however our current focus is on increasing our investment in original UK drama, which has strong appeal for our viewers."

Channel 5's decision means that unless Network 10 and Freemantle can find another UK channel to broadcast the Ramsay Street soap, it will face the axe entirely, as Channel 5 currently foots most of the production bill.

A spokesperson for Network 10 said, "As outlined in the email to Neighbours cast and crew, it is our intention to continue our association with Neighbours if another broadcast partner comes forward.

"Network 10 has an ongoing commitment to the show, the cast and crew and is hopeful that Fremantle will find a new production partner."

There are still 1.2 million UK viewers of the soap, which shot Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan to fame in the eighties, who are all devastated over the news and have launched a #SaveNeighbours campaign on social media.

One fan tweeted, "I’ve watched Neighbours for my entire life. It’s brought me joy, escapism and comfort when I’ve needed it. It’s introduced me to many amazing people who care so deeply about the show. It’s more than just a TV show for me and many others, it’s a community. #SaveNeighbours"

Another said, "Dear @neighbours @Channel5Press please give us hardcore fans a statement about the rumours in the Sun! We’re all literally clinging onto hope like Terese dangling off Lassiters roof. We bloomin adore the show & can’t face the thought of it being axed #Neighbours #saveNeighbours."

According to The Sun, bosses are looking to the show's most famous actors to save the soap.

An insider revealed, "Channel 5 pay Fremantle Australia many millions of pounds every year and, sadly, there’s a shortfall of about £5million in what it brings back in through advertising.

“There’s a lot of disbelief and sadness among those who know it’s struggling.

“They are currently in the process of approaching a number of former cast members, including Kylie, to make a special return.

“If it’s the end, it really would be something special to have her back in Ramsay Street one last time.”

Neighbours star Miranda Fryer who played Sky Mangel in the long-running soap has died aged 34.

The former child actress first appeared in the Australian soap back in 1989 - aged 18 months - as the daughter of Joe (Mark Little) and Kerry (Linda Hartley).

It's been confirmed by her family that she 'died suddenly in her sleep' at her home in Glen Iris, Melbourne.

In real-life, Miranda married Arthur Pothitis in November 2020 and her family told TV tonight, "True soulmates, Miranda and Arthur were making plans to start their family, when one day last week she went to sleep and never woke up. We do not know why.

"She had had some health issues with her heart, maybe her beautiful persona was just too good for this world of ours. We, who all loved her so much, shall treasure the memories she has left us with and mourn our loss forever."

"A beautiful child, stunning teenager, beautiful inside, and out … a woman, with so much love and happiness given and received. So many friends, so much still to offer this world, gone," they added.

Meanwhile, Neighbours casting director Jan Russ told TV Tonight, “I feel so very sad to lose one of my cast and especially one so young as Miranda who spent her very young years on the show …I love them like my own and feel the loss when they pass.”

The Aussie soap, which was first broadcast in the UK on BBC One back in 1985, before being moved to My5 in recent years, saw the youngster join Ramsay Street in 1989 when character Kerry Bishop moved into the street to live with her father Harold. Kerry was a single parent to Sky but she soon bonded with neighbour Joe Mangle and they spent a lot of time together much to her father's dismay.

Neighbours fans might recall baby Sky getting bitten with a red-backed spider while out on a picnic with her mum and grandfather one afternoon and Joe was the first on the scene at the hospital after - an act which made Kerry realise he was the one for her. They later married - Joe's son Toby was Page Boy and Sky as Flower girl and the family moved into number 32 Ramsay Street and Joe later adopted Sky as his own child.

Her on-screen character Sky had a complex childhood, following the death of her mother Kerry, her birth father Eric Jensen got custody of Sky and Joe briefly went on the run with his adopted daughter before returning her to her birth father.

But unhappy living with Eric, Sky returned to live with Joe. And Sky was written out of the soap when Joe went travelling around Europe with his new wife Melanie.

Following her time on the show, off-screen Miranda completed her high school education and went on to get a certificate in hospitality and an art diploma.

Putting acting firmly behind her, Miranda got her nursing degree last year Monash University and was due to start her postgraduate at Monash Hospital in the neuroscience department in February 2022.

And after an absence from screens, the character of Sky was reintroduced to storylines in 2003 but with a different actress.

Australian actress and singer Stephanie McIntosh was recast for the teenage role and appeared on screen until 2007.

He was one half of one of the most iconic couples of the 1980s when he got together with Kylie Minogue, having starred as her husband, Scott, on Neighbours, and jointly released the hit single Especially for You.

Kylie and Jason have since announced they are re-releasing Especially For You ahead of the Neighbours final show.

And Jason Donovan now says he ‘couldn’t be more proud’ of his eldest daughter, Jemma, as she followed in his footsteps and joined the cast of the Aussie soap in 2019 as Harlow Robinson – who also happens to be the great-niece of Scott (talk about keeping it in the family!).

The 52-year-old actor tells us, ‘I was delighted for her when she got the role. She’s a 20-year-old kid, she’s got a regular job, and she’s living in Australia, which is a wonderful country to be in.

‘She’s proven herself to be not only talented in her acting, but she’s shown me her strong mindset and values, and her passion to get to where she is.’

So, with Neighbours being such a family affair for Jason, would he return to the show that made him famous?

‘I don’t know whether you’d wear old shoes, but I tend to not,’ he bluntly puts it, before quickly adding, ‘But that doesn’t mean to say it’s not given me a wonderful life. Never say never, but at the same time I actually think those days have moved on for us.’

By this, Jason means his life is now in west London with his wife, Angela, and their two youngest children, Zac, 19, and nine-year-old Molly, and it’s clear he’s happy living in the UK.

Despite huge success on stage and screen – with his most prominent role being the lead in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat – he calls his family his greatest achievement, adding, ‘I’m very happy with my family and the life I’ve got. I’m not a bitter or twisted person, I’m happy with who I am, what I am, and my lot.’

While Jason isn’t keen on returning to Neighbours, something he jumped at the chance to take part in was ITV’s Dancing on Ice, and he’s been training for months in order to compete in the series, which starts this week.

‘I love winter sports and it’s been a quiet year, so being able to focus on the job at hand is good,’ he tells us. ‘And I have a lovely partner, so I’m lucky in that respect.’

While he admits he’s ‘pretty good on his legs’, thanks to experience in surfing, skiing and skateboarding, Jason had his first slip on the ice a month ago, which he describes as ‘a bit of a wake-up call’.

‘I might have had too many glasses of red wine the day before,’ he jokes. ‘But you’ve got to be a bit careful and very focused when you do this job. You just hope that when you do fall, it doesn’t cause any other issues.’

Along with Olympic skier Graham Bell, 55, and Olympic sprinter and hurdler Colin Jackson, 53, Jason is one of three men in their 50s taking part in this year’s series. And Jason insists it’s actually an advantage for them when it comes to competing against the younger contestants, such as 18-year-old Emmerdale star Joe-Warren Plant.

‘I have no problem with my age at all,’ he proudly states. ‘I’m really happy with who I am and what I am at my age, and I don’t see age as an obstacle in any shape or form.

‘I think the athletes probably have a little advantage for something like skating because they tend to be competitive and good on their feet.

‘But then,’ he finishes with a smile, ‘they haven’t done eight shows a week like I have – so game on!’

Neighbours’ Chris Milligan and Jenna Rosenow have announced their engagement, after meeting on the set of the popular soap.

The Australian actors played Kyle Canning and Amber Turner in the Australian show, but love soon blossomed in real life. Taking to Instagram, Chris posted a beautiful picture of the happy couple on a beach in Malibu, California.

And if that wasn’t romantic enough, the picture is taken against the backdrop of a stunning sunset. Jenna’s engagement ring can be seen sparkling on her ring finger.

Captioning it simply, ‘How good is a sunset🌞 ‘ it seems that the Neighbours stars wanted the dazzling photograph to speak for itself. 

After posting the exciting news, Chris and Jenna were quick to receive messages from many of their former co-stars. April Rose Pengilly, Takaya Honda, and Ben Hall all shared their congratulations to the newly-engaged couple. 

When did Chris Milligan and Jenna Rosenow leave Neighbours?

The actors both left Neighbours’ famous Ramsay Street in 2016, to pursue opportunities in Los Angeles. Chris later returned to the soap in 2019. Speaking previously about the move to LA, Chris revealed that he would like to return in the future. 

As reported by digitalspy.com, Chris went on Neighbours co-star Takaya Honda's YouTube interview series and explained: "It was good. I mean me and Jenna moved to LA, we were in LA for two years. Then we moved to Canada for six months. Then I came back to Brisbane, back to labouring work for three months, and then I came back on the show."

"The whole LA thing, going over there and doing that, I feel like I'm going to be better once I go back," Chris went on to add. "It's not that I wasn't ready... I don't think I was ready for what would've happened if I did get a job. I was looking at LA the wrong way.”

Meanwhile Chris’ new fiancée Jenna went on to have a guest appearance in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow after leaving Neighbours. 

She is also set to star in Netflix’s upcoming drama series, Firefly Lane, alongside Katherine Heigl, Sarah Chalke and Ben Lawson. 

Now with a wedding to plan too, this is turning out to be a very exciting year for them both.

Neighbours actors Travis Burns and Emma Lane have announced their engagement.

Taking to their respective Instagram pages, the Ramsay Street residents both shared intimate photos of the moment Travis got down on one knee.

Travis, who has played Tyler Brennan in the Channel 5 soap since February 2015, captioned his picture, 'A beautiful location with the most beautiful woman in my life! So I asked her to spend the rest of her life with me.'

The engagement took place while the pair were on a Malibu Safari adventure in California.

Emma is currently based in the USA while Travis remains in Australia, but it seems their long-distance relationship has gone from strength to strength as the happy couple prepare to walk down the aisle.

The 30-year-old actress also couldn't resist sharing the moment with her fans, saying; 'My best friend asked to spend forever with me – I said YES.'

Emma also shared a selfie of the couple drinking champagne taken just 'moments before' the proposal.

Fans couldn't help but notice how 'calm' the actor looked, with one commenter saying; 'He looks so cool, calm and collected. Congratulations lovers x'

Another said; 'Trav doesn't even look nervous! Gosh you two are goals, I hope you two never forget me xx'

The pair met while they were filming on the set of Neighbours, with Emma playing the guest character of Courtney Grixti – Tyler's current girlfriend.

But before the pair got together on-screen, their off-screen love did cause some awkwardness on set according to other cast members.

Fellow actor Harley Bonner, who had a romance with Emma's character Courtney said; 'Emma is actually Travis Burns' real life girlfriend and you know that my real-life girlfriend is Ari, who plays Imogen, and you know those two had to kiss. It's really funny because now I get to have a little bit of revenge because I'm kissing her. It's a really normal life we lead.' Congratulations to the happy couple!
