Top tips for making a Halloween blood red cocktail

You could easily swap the pomegranate juice for other juices and gin or other light spirits would match nicely too. Continue reading for some spooky serving suggestions and tips.

How to garnish a Halloween cocktail?

You could create a black salt rim by combining sea salt with a little activated charcoal. You can by capsules from health stores like Holland & Barrett and they are pretty much tasteless but will help you achieve a dramatic garnish. We’d recommend swapping to tequila or mezcal instead of vodka if you do a salt rim.

Alternatively, stuff some lychees with blueberries to look like spooky eyeballs. Thread onto a cocktail stick and balance on the top of your cocktail or place it inside.

What spirits go well with blood orange?

If you are using blood orange juice instead of pomegranate juice, the vodka will still go very nicely. It will be very similar to a classic screwdriver cocktail which is made from orange juice and vodka. You could use gin if you prefer or tequila is a nice choice too.

You can also garnish with a slice of blood orange when you serve the cocktail or use a vegetable peeler to shave off a strip of zest.

Why are some cocktails shaken and others stirred?

Shaking mixes drinks more thoroughly and also chills them down beautifully for drinking. Cocktails that contain cream liqueurs, creamy mixers or fruity juice are best shaken to live up the ingredients. Cocktails that are mostly made up of spirits and bitters are better stirred so they retain a better texture.
