A bit of a scare

  • I think this website just might have saved my life. I’m serious. I’ve just discovered I have early furring of the arteries round my heart. How scary is that? It all started when I saw Dr Chris Steele on This Morning talking about a heart scan he’d had done, which showed he had advanced heart disease.

So I thought it would be a good idea for us to do a piece on goodtoknow about women and heart disease. Did you know four times as many women die of heart disease than breast cancer in this country? Isn’t that shocking? Anyway, as a middle aged woman who hasn’t eaten the healthiest of diets over the years, who hates exercise and could do with losing a couple of stone, I thought I’d go along to the European Scanning Centre in Harley Street, London and have the scan done myself. I wasn’t particularly worried. There’s no history of heart disease in our family and I don’t smoke. ‘I’ll be fine,’ I thought. What a shock I had in store when I got the result and found out that I had signs of furring of the arteries.

This is the only place in the country to have this particular EBCT scanner (Electron Beam Computed Tomography) which is the most advance in the UK. In just five minutes it can accurately detect ‘furring-up’ of the arteries and show the concentration of dangerous calcified plaque.

Heart disease is a silent killer. I feel absolutely fine. But carry on as I am and in 20 years time chances are I’ll have a stroke or a heart attack. Well, I can’t let that happen, can I? I want to be around to enjoy any grandchildren I’m lucky enough to have. So overnight I’ve changed my life. Healthy food and exercise, that’s what it’s all about now. I don’t know what’s hit me.

I’ve got to do this, but it’s not going to be easy. If you’ve got any helpful advice, please send it in. I need it.

An EBCT scan is done when you are full clothed, it is fast and exposes you to a much lower dose of radiation than a conventional CT scan. It’s also cheaper than an annual service on your car – £525. If you want details, go to their website: www.europeanscanning.com
