  • Meghan Markle has opened up about her relationship with Prince Harry for the first time, in a candid interview with Vanity Fair.

American actress Meghan, 36, told contributing editor Sam Kashner that she and Harry were ‘in love’ and ‘happy’, and gave a rare insight into the way that the pair see their courtship, which has largely been kept out of the public eye.

‘I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time,’ Meghan admitted.

‘This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.’

Meghan and Harry met in July 2016, not May as previously reported, and the prince was forced to confirm that they were dating in November after photographers began hounding his girlfriend.

In a statement released at the time, royal officials declared: ‘Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her.’

‘It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that “this is all part of the game”.’

‘He strongly disagrees. This is not a game – it is her life and his.’

When asked how she felt about being one half of of such a high profile association Meghan replied: ‘It has its challenges, and it comes in waves—some days it can feel more challenging than others.’

‘And right out of the gate it was surprising the way things changed. But I still have this support system all around me, and, of course, my boyfriend’s support.’

Rumours of the couple’s possible engagement have been circulating for some time, and recently an expert even revealed the date that they believed the union would be announced.

However, neither Meghan or Harry have addressed the speculation, and still have yet to make a formal appearance together.
