  • David Beckham has opened up about his 19-year marriage to fashion designer Victoria Beckham, describing it as ‘hard work’ and ‘complicated’ in a candid TV interview.

The retired footballer and entrepreneur – who shares children Brooklyn, 19, Romeo, 16, Cruz, 13, and Harper, seven, with the former Spice Girl – opened up about his marriage in Australian TV show The Sunday Project.

He said: ‘To have been married for the amount of time that we have, it’s always hard work.

‘It becomes a little more complicated.’

The 43-year-old also confessed to host Lisa Wilkinson that he ‘has one regret’, but the snippet from the forthcoming episode – which airs this Sunday – fails to elaborate on what this is.

On a lighter family note, he spoke of the joys of fatherhood saying: ‘Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference.

‘I’ve noticed that with my children.’

The father-of-four’s words come just months after wife Victoria posed on the cover of British Vogue’s October issue with her brood and family dog Olive, with David noticeably absent.

While it’s not clear why he wasn’t there for the iconic photoshoot, David was clear to emphasise his support for his family.

Sharing the cover on Instagram, he accompanied it with the words: ‘Victoria has worked long and hard to build an incredibly successful brand over the last ten years and I am so proud of her. I’m happy to be in a position to support her dreams. It was an honour to have been part of the October @britishvogue cover shoot to celebrate @victoriabeckham and my beautiful family, it’s out on Friday. Thank you @edward_enninful.’

Address the fact that the couple is always subject to speculation about their relationship, Victoria told Vogue: ‘People have been making things up about our relationship for 20 years, so David and I are pretty used to ignoring the nonsense and just carrying on as normal.’

She went on to describe what being together really means for the A-list couple: ‘We both realise that we are stronger together than we are as individuals.

‘Would either of us be in the position that we are in now had we not met and been together all those years ago?

‘It’s all about the family unit. We are much stronger the six of us, than we would be if we were individuals. We respect that family bond and that is key.’
