Teacher praised for ditching curriculum and spending day outside with children after Manchester attack

'We turned our face to the sunshine and lived'

A teacher has been labelled 'inspirational' for taking her class of primary school children outside for the day to celebrate life after the tragic events in Manchester at the weekend.

Primary school teacher Liane Nicholson has opened up about teaching her class of young children 'the importance of being alive and free' in a Facebook post that has gone viral, being liked nearly 100,000 times.

Liane took to the social media site on Monday to explain that, 'in light of what has happened last night I decided that my class of 5 year olds were not going to be made to spend their morning doing phonics and listening to the maths input.

'Instead we went outside turned our face to the sunshine and lived.'

The teacher continued to describe the lovely activities she did with her class, including blowing bubbles and giving out hugs.

'We blew bubbles and chased after them, we made pictures from leaves and flowers, we poured water all over ourselves, found mini beasts and made homes for them, dug for fossils and made mud pies.

'We rolled down the banking, screamed and laughed. We also made today hug day and anyone could ask for a hug or give a hug to a friend.'

The year one teacher chose not to talk about the attack on the Manchester Arena and encouraged her 'babies' to 'bring joy' to all around them.

'I was inundated with hugs today, nothing about the atrocities was mentioned to my babies(all 30 of them) but they seemed to sense the importance of being alive and free more than usual today.

'Innocent children, bringing joy to all those around them. They make me proud to be a teacher xx'

Liane's post has been shared over 21k times and been inundated with supportive comments, with many Facebook users calling her 'wonderful' and 'inspirational'.

One user said, 'Inspirational! Those children are so lucky to have you.'

Whilst another commented, 'Good day spent with those children. I hope they know how lucky they are. Plenty of time for the mundane things, but letting them have fun will do them more good than the 12 x tables ever did Brilliant!'

Many more messages went on to congratulate the teacher, such as, 'Well done that teacher! More should have the courage and conviction to abandon the rigid curriculum for a day of life xxx'
