Rio Ferdinand’s son has left him emotional with a sweet message about his father’s engagement.

Rio, who has been with his now-fiancé Kate Wright since early last year, proposed to the former The Only Way Is Essex star earlier this week.

The newly-engaged couple both took to Instagram to share the happy news after Rio proposed to Kate in front of his three children during a family holiday to Abu Dhabi.

To announce the much-anticipated engagement, Rio wrote the caption: ‘She said yes 💍 ❤ How these 3 kids kept it a secret I’ll never know’, alongside three adorable photos of the new family of five embracing.

And it seems that the footballer’s children couldn’t be happier about the news.

Lorenz, the former England player’s eldest son, commented on the post with a sweet message congratulating his father and new stepmum-to-be.

‘So glad she said yes,’ wrote the 12-year-old. ‘I am so proud of u dad and Kate love u both so much ❤❤’.

Rio highlighted the loving message on his Instagram story, commenting that his ‘boy is trying to make his dad all emotional’.

This comes after the former Man United star revealed that his kids, including Tate, 10 and Tia, 7, had been pressuring him to marry Kate Wright following the death of their mother, his wife Rebecca Ellison.

Despite going through ups and downs as a family and experiencing a tough time after the death of Rebecca, the family seem to be closer than ever now that Kate has stepped in to fulfil a motherly role for the footballer’s three children.

In an emotional Instagram post, the former reality star recently praised her new fiancé for winning a BAFTA for his documentary Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum and Dad, in which he opened up about Rebecca’s battle with cancer and how the family dealt with her death.
