Robinsons recall Fruit Shoot sold at Tesco and other outlets amid choking concerns

  • The parent company of leading fruit drink brand Robinsons has made a targeted recall of certain batches of Fruit Shoot sold at Costco, McDonald’s and Tesco over fears children could choke on the lid.

    In a statement the Food Standards Agency (FSA) revealed that certain varieties of Robinson’s Fruit Shoot Apple and Blackcurrant present a safety risk because of the ‘potential detachment of the spout within the bottle cap’.

    As a result Britvic is recalling the above flavour – sold between June 22nd and June 28th – if it meets the criteria below:

    Pack size: 24 x 200ml multipack (Tesco and Costco) and 200ml single bottle (McDonald’s)

    Batch code: NO5 L9164, NO5 L9171 and NO6 L9171

    Best before: March 2020

    The multipacks are out of stock at both Tesco and McDonalds and the FSA revealed that point-of-sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that sell this product.

    In July 2012, Britvic announced a precautionary recall of all Robinsons Fruit Shoot and Fruit Shoot Hydro packs featuring its new design cap after identifying ‘an issue with a small number of damaged caps which may become fully or partially detached’.

    A week later it revealed that it had been unable to speedily resolve the issues relating to the new design cap and would ‘re-supply with an alternative in-market proven sports cap’ in the short term.

    In a move unrelated to the above, Tesco already writes the following on its website under the ‘warnings’ section of the product description for several Fruit Shoot products:

    ‘WARNING: CHOKING RISK. Caps contain small parts. Unsuitable for children under 36 months. Open by hand. Don’t refill bottles.’

    First launched in 2000, Fruit Shoot has become a firm packed lunch favourite with parents and on its website Britvic reveals that Fruit Shoot is the number one kids’ soft drink brand in the UK.
