‘Amazing’ mum gets Wonder Woman-inspired tattoo over her mastectomy scars

After a preventative move against breast cancer (opens in new tab), one mum has channelled Wonder Woman with an 'amazing' tattoo (opens in new tab) following a double mastectomy.

Stephanie Kelly is a 42-year-old mum of four and recently tested positive for the BRCA1 gene mutation, which means she has an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer (opens in new tab).

Sharing an image of her new artwork on her Instagram page, Stephanie received nothing but positivity over her 'gorgeous' tattoo.

'Wow that's amazing and so are you little Wonder Woman !!!' posted one follower.

'Amazing so gorgeous', said another, whilst a third wrote: 'I am blown away. This is a beautiful tattoo in itself and your fearlessness is an inspiration. Fight on!'

Talking to PEOPLE magazine, Stephanie revealed that she wasn't surprised when the BRCA1 test came back positive because her own mum has had breast cancer twice.

She explained: 'With the family history and m just my general luck about things, I'd always expected breast cancer to play some role in my life. It would have been a great surprise if it had been negative!'

In a bid to get her through the surgery, the mum turned to the iconic superhero, as she had 'always loved Wonder Woman'.

Due to other health complications, Stephanie decided not to have breast reconstructive surgery following treatment, and instead opted to get a tattoo to cover her double mastectomy scars.

'I began to joke that I was going to be like Wonder Woman and be strong and unfazed by the things I needed to do that scared me,' she said.

'Friends and family sent me little gifts of Wonder Woman figurines, cards, clothes, even a full robe.

'It all helped me feel stronger and it was a way to feel all the love and support I had and bring that along with me.'

Women opting for mastectomy tattoos have become a trend in the past few years, with many women getting them as a way to reclaim their bodies from cancer.
