Next has issued an urgent recall of one of its popular children’s raincoats over fears it could be a choking risk.

The high-street retailer has urged parents who purchased one of their iridescent unicorn jackets to return it to their local store immediately.

Next revealed that a fabric fault has been identified on some of the coats, which means the plastic coating is peeling away and 'could present a potential choking or suffocation hazard to young children'.

Customers should also notify anyone they may have gifted an iridescent unicorn jacket to so they can also return it to their local Next store.

A safety notice from Next states: ‘Unfortunately, it's come to light that there’s a fabric fault on some of the jackets. On the faulty items, the plastic coating is peeling away from the fabric and if detached, could present a potential choking, or suffocation hazard to young children.

‘As some of the jackets don't meet our strict technical specifications, we are taking the precaution of recalling them and request that you return the jacket to us immediately for a full refund.’

The product number of the jacket is 467-234 and comes in ages three months up to six years.

Shoppers can either return the product to stores or call 0333 777 8185 to arrange a collection.

The notice adds: ‘If you have given this item as a gift, please ask the recipient to contact Next as soon as possible. We're very sorry for any disappointment and inconvenience this may cause.’

It was only last December that the popular retailer urgently recalled two coats from their childrenswear range.

The smart Grey/Pink Fur Collar Coat and the Navy Hooded Coat were recalled over fears the buttons on them could become detached and present a choking hazard to young children.

Next said at the time: 'The coat passed the rigorous testing required for childrenswear, however we have identified that the bulk production has not achieved the same high standard consistently. We've taken the decision of recalling it and request that you return the coat to us for a full refund.'
