Caipirinha is a delicious alcoholic cocktail and is the national drink of Brazil, so what could be nicer than lazing on a deckchair on a hot Summer afternoon, sipping this ice-cool refreshing treat. The base of Caipirinha is Cachaca, a type of Brazilian rum made from sugar cane juice. You should find Cachaca in most supermarkets and off licences but if you do have difficulties tracking it down you can use Vodka or any white rum which is just as good.
Ingredients
- 2 large limes
- 100ml Cachaca or any white rum
- 2tsp brown sugar
- Plenty of crushed ice
- Soda water to top up
- Mint leaves
- Fruit to decorate

Method
- Roll the limes around on a board to soften them and to make them easier to remove the juice.
- Cut the limes into wedges and divide between two tall glasses. Add the sugar.
- Using the back of a spoon squash the limes and sugar together to release the juices and flavours.
- Pour 50ml of Cachaca or rum into each glass.
- Add crushed ice and top up each glass with soda water.
- Add mint leaves and serve.
Top Tip for making Caipirinha cocktail
This recipe is perfect to adapt using any fruits you like. Try adding a few raspberries, strawberries or blueberries – you can omit the lime or leave it in – mash them down in the glass with sugar to taste, add ice, soda water and mint. Why not try tangerine, passion fruit, lemon or mango or mixtures of different fruits together – the list is endless.
