Soy sauce and spices give the pork a tangy, Oriental twist in this tasty recipe for all the family

Ingredients

For the marinade:

  • 2 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • ½ tsp Chinese 5 spice
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 1 tbsp sunflower oil
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil

For the apple compote:

  • 3 apples, peeled, cored and finely chopped
  • Zest and juice of 1 lime
  • 1 red chilli, finely sliced
  • 1/8 tsp dried chilli flakes (optional)
  • 2-3 tbsp chopped fresh coriander
  • 1 tsp chopped fresh flat leaf parsley

  1. Put the pork in a shallow dish. Mix together all the ingredients for the marinade and massage into the pork. Cover and chill for at least 30 minutes, or overnight.
  2. For the apple compote, put the finely chopped apples, lime zest and lime juice and 3 tablespoons water into a saucepan. Cover with a lid and cook over a medium heat for 10-15 minutes, until soft. Transfer to a liquidizer and process until smooth. Allow to cool. Stir in the remaining apple compote ingredients and season to taste.
  3. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 200°C/fan180°C/ gas 6. Heat a griddle on the hob until smoking. Put the pork steaks onto the griddle and briefly sear for about 1-1½ minutes on each side. Transfer to the oven and cook for 5 minutes, until cooked through. Serve with the sauce and vegetables.
