The Twits' worm spaghetti is a fab fun way to get the kids to enjoy eating veg - because you'll blitz them, they'll never know. If your kids love Roald Dahl, then they'll love eating this recipe - it'll get their imagination going and they'll be eating a healthy recipe packed full of healthy veg and protein at the same time. This recipe takes a little while in the oven, but it really is worth it because all the flavours have loads of time to come together perfectly. This makes it a really great recipe to make at the start of the week and you can enjoy it in the couple of days after if you want to pack it for lunch the next day.

Ingredients

  • 2tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 stick celery, finely chopped
  • 1 carrot, peeled and grated
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 300g mixed mushrooms
  • 400g each pork and beef mince
  • 2tbsp tomato purée
  • 1tbsp Marmite
  • 400g tin chopped tomatoes
  • 200ml beef stock
  • 500g spaghetti or linguine

Method

  1. Heat 1tbsp oil in a casserole and fry the onion, celery and carrot for 10 mins. Add the garlic, cook for 2 mins, then spoon into a blender.
  2. Tip the mushrooms into remaining oil and cook until crisp. Add two-thirds to the veg, then whizz until smooth.
  3. Heat oven to 140C fan,gas 2.5. Add the pork and beef to the pan and fry in the rest of the oil until browned. Stir in the tomato purée, Marmite, mushroom mix, tomatoes and stock. Bring to the boil, cover and cook in the oven for 2 hrs until tender.
  4. Cook the pasta, then drain and tip back into the pan. Spoon over the sauce, stir and serve topped with the remaining mushrooms.
