Prince of Wales announced as the person walking Meghan Markle down the aisle at royal wedding

Prince Charles has been announced as the person who will be walking Meghan Markle down the aisle on Saturday.

The official confirmation came via a statement on Twitter, which read: 'Ms. Meghan Markle has asked His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to accompany her down the aisle of the Quire of St George's Chapel on her Wedding Day.

'The Prince of Wales is pleased to be able to welcome Ms Markle to The Royal Family in this way.'

The announcement comes after a week of speculation as to who would replace Meghan's dad, following the news that he would not be attending the service at Windsor, on Saturday.

The sad news was confirmed yesterday in a heartbreaking statement from Meghan, who said that her father would not be able to attend the celebration and asked that he's given space to 'focus on his health'.

The statement read: 'Sadly, my father will not be attending our wedding. I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health.

‘I would like to thank everyone who has offered generous messages of support. Please know how much Harry and I look forward to sharing our special day with you on Saturday.’

Thomas Markle reportedly told journalists that he had suffered a heart, and later added that he was due to have surgery on Wednesday, which meant it was unlikely that he would be flying to the UK in time for the ceremony.

He is yet to meet the man who's marrying his daughter, Prince Harry, and seems like the two will only come face to face after Meghan officially joins the royal family.

Before the Palace announced that Prince Charles is the one accompanying Meghan down the aisle, it was thought that Meghan’s mum Doria could be the one stepping up, as she will be accompanying her in the car to Windsor Castle.
