Jaffa Cake makers McVities are causing a stir, and it's not down to the great biscuit or a cake debate but the way we choose to eat it.

And apparently, we've all been doing it wrong.

The new conundrum which has baffled lovers of the sweet treat was highlighted after a fan, known only as David, messaged the company to ask "What side of the Jaffa is the bottom?"

And McVities' answer has left everyone mind-blown.

They replied: "Hi David, our Jaffa Cakes go through a reservoir of chocolate, so the chocolate is on the bottom. Thanks, Jaffa Cakes."

David was shocked by this revelation replying, "Wtf dude." And he wasn't the only one shocked by the revelation.

"OMG just turned my world upside down," one person said.

Meanwhile another wrote, "Am I the only one who always thought the chocolate was the bottom anyway?"

Despite the promotional packaging showing the cake biscuit chocolate side up, the official way to eat it is with the plain cake side up. (Even if it means getting crumbs of chocolate on your lap.)

The biscuit recipe contains a cake sponge element, orange jelly and chocolate base. So while we try to get our heads around flipping the treat onto it's chocolate jelly bottom, there's more...

The new revelation appears to not only apply to Jaffa cakes, but to all chocolate topped biscuits.

A rep previously said, "When we make our McVitie’s chocolate biscuits – whether that be Chocolate Hobnobs, Chocolate Digestives, or even Jaffa Cakes – they go through a reservoir of chocolate on the production line. ‘This essentially “enrobes” the bottom in chocolate – so we can confirm that the chocolate is officially on the bottom of the biscuits."

Time to make a cup of tea and try eating a McVities Festive Jaffa Cake the proper way...
