ITV bosses have confirmed that hit show Love Island has been cancelled.
Fans of the ITV matchmaking show have been on tenterhooks wondering whether the Mallorca-based series will air this year amid the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
And now in light of the virus outbreak it looks like fans will have to survive the next few months without the summer staple.
“We have tried every which way to make Love Island this summer but logistically it’s just not possible to produce it in a way that safeguards the wellbeing of everyone involved and that for us is the priority,” said Kevin Lygo, Director of Television at ITV.
“In normal circumstances we would be preparing very soon to travel out to the location in Mallorca to get the villa ready but clearly that’s now out of the question.
“We are very sorry for fans of the show but making it safely is our prime concern and Love Island will be back stronger than ever in 2021. In the meantime Love Island fans can still enjoy all six series of Love Island on BritBox”.
In light of the travel restrictions and social distancing measure required due to the virus outbreak, it was unlikely that the show would be able to take place this summer – but fans still had hope!
But unfortunately due to the restrictions still being in place and the fact that the team would have to travel out to Spain soon to get preparations underway, it won’t be possible to go ahead with this year’s series.
“Producers are looking at ways of making it work,” a source told The Daily Star on Sunday, while the Love Island team still had hope to be able to make this year’s series work.
“The current plan is to fly crew and contestants out to Majorca two weeks before filming starts and then isolate everyone,” the source revealed, “but even with these measures, insurance companies won’t offer cover.
“ITV can’t do the series without insurance,” they revealed. “If the series is airing and even just one person tests positive for the virus, the whole thing would have to be shut down immediately”.
Looks like we’re going to have to find something else to do this summer!
