Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have unfollowed all accounts on Instagram in order to highlight a good cause.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who are currently expecting their first child believed to be due any day now, set up their own shared Instagram account at the start of last month.

At the time, the royal couple followed 23 other Instagram accounts, including Prince William and Kate Middleton’s account Kensington Royal and Prince Charles and Camilla’s account Clarence House.

They also followed other royal family members like Princess Eugenie and the Queen’s The Royal Family account.

However, exactly one month on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have unfollowed all of the other royal family members’ Instagram accounts, in a cull that saw them unfollow each of the 23 account that they originally followed.

And while you might think there’s some social media politics going on here, the royal couple have actually taken the move in order to support a good cause.

‘May is Mental Health Awareness Month in the US and May 13-19 is Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK,’ the couple explained in a statement on their Instagram account.‘To pay tribute to all of the incredible work people across the globe are doing in this space, we are hoping to shine a light on several Instagram accounts that promote mental well-being, mental fitness, body positivity, self-care, and the importance of human connection - to not just hear each other, but to listen.

‘There are countless organisations doing amazing work for mental health,’ they continued, ‘please consider the accounts we’ve highlighted as a small snapshot of this global support network.‘We are all in this together,’ wrote the charitable couple.‘We invite you to explore the extraordinary stories of strength, and the commitment to kindness as seen in the above accounts.’

Harry and Meghan then went on to explain exactly why they had unfollowed the 23 accounts and what kinds of accounts they would continue to follow going forward.

‘Each month we will honour this same concept and change the accounts we solely follow based on a different theme or cause.

‘Please go to our homepage and click “following” to see each of the select accounts and find out more about their work.’

This month the couple are following charities and high-profile individuals who support mental health, including author Matt Haig, columnist Bryony Gordon and app Headspace.

We wonder who they’ll follow next month! Baby and parenting charities maybe…
