Marmite and peanut butter are fairly divisive toast toppings as it is, so putting the two together was bound to cause controversy.

Marmite Peanut Butter launches in Ocado today, combining classic Marmite with crunchy peanut butter to create the spread of your dreams – or nightmares. Marmite lovers have been spoilt for choice lately, with the launch of ASDA's Marmite Easter egg and Papa John's Marmite stuffed crust, but this is the brand's first new permanent product launch since the brand began in 1902.

Marmite say they are ‘confident that the nation is going to love it’ and that the spread was conceived in response to ‘overwhelming demand’.

‘The British public asked, and we listened,’ said Camilla Williamson, who is Marmite’s brand manager. ‘We’re delighted to bring the nation exactly what they’ve been craving with the creation of Marmite Peanut Butter.’

Twitter has been buzzing with reactions from shoppers.

Some people could barely contain their excitement. ‘Two of my favourite things to have on toast, in one handy jar!’ one tweeted.

‘YES @marmite you absolute legends,’ another agreed. And for one spread lover, one word said it all: ‘FINALLY’.

But not everyone agreed. ‘No just no,’ said one Twitter user. ‘Simply wrong,’ another agreed. ‘Is this the End of Days?’ asked another.

‘What is the world coming to?’ one person demanded. ‘Can we add this to the list of things to march against!’

Even some Marmite lovers were unconvinced. ‘Good way to ruin Marmite,’ tweeted one. ‘Now I love #Marmite, but hate #peanutbutter, my husband is the exact opposite,’ another woman explained. ‘I doubt this “marriage” of Marmite Peanut Butter will be a compromise for us. Makes my stomach turn thinking about it!’

But many people were just left baffled. ‘This confuses me,’ mused one Twitter user. ‘I can’t decide if this is the greatest thing ever or a food abomination,’ said another.

If you’re in the undecided camp, you can pick up a 225g jar from Ocado for £2.50 from today.

Marmite Peanut Butter will roll out across supermarkets nationwide from 7th April.
