Meghan Markle's father Thomas has given his first interview since his daughter married Prince Harry in a ceremony that was watched by millions of people across the world.
Thomas Markle sadly missed out on the opportunity to walk his daughter down the aisle and revealed that although he was 'very proud' he was tremendously disappointed to have missed out on the momentous occasion.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain to Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, Thomas revealed the protocols he had to follow during the early stages of Meghan and Harry's relationship to ensure no one knew about them dating before they went official.
Thomas recalled the moment Meghan told his she was dating a British Prince and it wasn't until the father and daughter's third conversation about her new boyfriend.
He said: 'The first phone calls were "dad I have a new boyfriend".' Thomas adds that he said that was nice and then Meghan added that he was British.
Thomas explained: 'Eventually the third time around [Meghan] was like "He's a Prince". And at that point, she said "It's Harry" and I said Oh, Harry okay!".'
Meghan asked her father to refer to Prince Harry as 'H' so that nobody knew who he was or figured out that she was the Prince's mysterious new girlfriend.
Meghan's father also revealed that she had wanted children 'for a long time' and that he thinks the couple will have children soon.
Thomas also addressed the staged photographs that emerged in the week before Harry and Meghan's wedding. Explaining that he realised the photos were a mistake Thomas said he was simply trying to counteract the negative perception of him that was being aired.
He said: 'They'd take photos of me grabbing a beer, take photos of me getting into my car... they'd take photos of me making me look negative.'
Thomas said that he apologised to his daughter and Prince Harry as soon as the pictures were released and that the couple were very forgiving and still very much wanted him at the wedding.
However, due to problems with his heart health Thomas could not make the flight over the England.
He said: 'I couldn't get over the fact that had happened, all that stuff was working on me. I had a heart condition...The unfortunate thing is I am now a footnote in one of the greatest moments in history rather than the Dad walking her down the aisle.'
