  • Eastenders star Natalie Cassidy has announced her engagement to boyfriend Marc Humphreys, two years after she ended her troubled relationship with former partner Adam Cottrell.

The 32-year-old actress said yes to her boyfriend of one year – who is a freelance cameraman who has worked on the soap – this weekend, with a spokesperson for Natalie confirming, ‘We can confirm that Natalie got engaged this weekend and she is really happy.’

Since the two started dating, they’ve been spotted out together numerous times, including with Natalie’s daughter Eliza, with whom Marc is said to also have a great relationship.

According to an insider who spoke to The Sun newspaper, Natalie’s family and friends are thrilled for her and have already begun buying gifts to celebrate the actress’ engagement.

Natalie’s happy news come two years after the Eastenders star split from her abusive fianc√© Adam Cottrell. The couple were together on and off for four years, and he is dad to five-year-old Eliza.

In 2011, Adam pleaded guilty to two charges of criminal damage and two offences of assault, and was ordered to complete 120 hours of community service. The attacks included Natalie’s ex-partner hitting her with a slipper and ripping her clothes when he grabbed her.

Speaking in an interview in 2013, after deciding to give the relationship another try, the two-time British Soap Award winner revealed that her behaviour also played a part in the abusive relationship.

‘I often lashed out physically at him when arguments weren’t going my way. I would hit him or slap him out of frustration and anger. He would often come home from work and drink a bottle of wine,’ she said. ‘He wasn’t interested in eating the dinner I’d cooked him or spending time with me. It made me feel worthless. It was hurtful and I wanted to hurt him back. Sadly, sometimes that meant lashing out physically.’

The onscreen Sonia Fowler also revealed that she was determined to give the abusive relationship another try for her daughter’s sake. ‘It was my decision. I’m really glad I gave it another chance. When kids are involved you almost have to. I can always say to Eliza, ‘Mummy tried, but it didn’t work out’.’
