Food on a budget: 8 tips every mum should know

    Having successfully completing her challenge, Anneliese shares her handy and helpful tips that she learnt from her experience.

    1. Plan what you’re going to make in advance

    Planning what you’re going to eat for the week will stop the temptation to buy extra items when you visit the supermarket. You’ll know exactly what ingredients you need for each meal and how some ingredients will overlap into other recipes. It’s a great way of making sure you buy what you need and use it all up too.

    2. Shop around

    If you always find yourself visiting the same supermarket over and over again it’s time to shop around. You could try market stalls for veggies, pound shops for branded products and you could even forage for your own fruits in the great outdoors like Anneliese did. Look around for different deals at the supermarkets and look online too – sometimes you can get discount codes online that wouldn’t apply in store.

    3. Turn today’s leftovers into tomorrow’s lunch

    Leftovers from dinner? Turn it into tomorrow’s lunch! Using up leftovers is a great way of making sure you get every penny’s worth. Turn your roast dinner leftovers into bubble and squeak brunch, use leftover meat in curries or risottos or use ready cooked pasta in salads for lunch – the possibilities are endless!

    4. Make from scratch

    Making some meals from scratch is a great way to save money. Anneliese managed to make a family-sized pizza for around £1 which is so much cheaper than a takeaway or readymade version – and a lot healthier too!  

    5. Loose vs bagged

    Anneliese found that buying loose fruit and veggies in the supermarket or from market stalls was much cheaper than already packaged or bagged fruit and veg. If you buy loose fruit or veg too you can decide how many of each you’d like instead of buying a bag and not using them all up.

    6. Chopped tomatoes are a life-saver

    A tin of chopped tomatoes can really go a long way. They’re cheap to buy, have a long shelf life and can make the basis of any tomato based sauce – from Bolognese to pizza sauce.

    7. Adapt recipes

    Adapting recipes to suit your budget and your family’s taste buds of course is acceptable. For example you don’t have to go out of your way to buy risotto rice for risotto as you can just use regular white rice instead which is much cheaper.

    8. Buy pasta in bulk

    Some items are best bought in bulk. Anneliese discovered that buying pasta in bulk was so much cheaper than buying little packets every now and then – especially as her family were pasta fans. Swap the small for the large and save yourself a few pennies here and there.
