Kayla Itsines has hit back at critics who claim she shouldn’t be lifting weights and exercising while pregnant and she has the best response.
Fitness entrepreneur Kayla Itsines and her fiancé Tobi Pearce announced they were expecting their first child together in December.
The couple later revealed that they will be welcoming a little girl and most of Kayla’s followers have been delighted that she is documenting her pregnancy on social media.
This also means that Kayla is continuing to share her workout videos in line with her pregnancy week by week but it has attracted some negativity. Some of Kayla’s followers raised their concerns over weight lifting while pregnant and made their thoughts known in the comments section of Kayla’s posts.
One person wrote: ‘You are not allowed to lift weights while pregnant?!’, while another said: ‘I feel the baby crying’.
Kayla took note of some of the critiques and decided it was time to call them out with the best response.
She explained: ‘For the ladies who are writing things like “you are not allowed to lift weights while pregnant?!”, “is that safe??”. I want to put this into perspective for you.
‘The weights I’m lifting are rarely over 5kgs per hand. I want to you keep that in mind as you read this story….’
Kayla then detailed how she visited a pregnant friend who also has a two-year-old and how she was busy going about her day-to-day chores.
She explained how her friend playfully picked up her two-year-old and rested them on her bump, how her friend packed her car with the child’s pram and two heavy bags and managed to drive to breakfast and unpack the car on her own without anyone causing a fuss.
Kayla said: ‘No one batted an eyelid, no one said anything, no one helped. I asked her SO MANY times, “can I help you, let me help you, I want to help!!” She said “babe, I do this EVERY DAY, I don’t need your help haha”.’
She continued: ‘Ladies, my point is, working out safely while pregnant is a wonderful thing. I have been active my whole life. As long as you have clearance from your doctor, you CAN workout and you can use weights. Just because I’m standing in a gym with a crop top and shorts, doesn’t make it any less safe to lift something.
‘I do not lift heavy weights, in fact I’ve cut the weight in HALF that I usually use. ✅ For the mums who have had kids… you would be the first to agree that there are PLENTY of things heavier than 5kgs in your house that you would have to lift or move daily (including other children)’.
Kayla stressed that you should only ever do exercise that is suitable during pregnancy and should seek clearance from your doctor. But, if you’ve always been active you really shouldn’t be worried.
According to NHS guidelines, you can keep up your normal daily physical activity or exercise for as long as you feel comfortable.
Several fellow fitness bloggers supported Kayla’s comments including new mum Carly Rowena. She said: ‘I did crossfit throughout my pregnancy until the day before birth & had the healthiest & happiest pregnancy & baby xx’.
Other followers thanked Kayla for clarifying the guidelines and sharing her experience.
